AJ Burnett for Gustavo Chacin
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-burnet13jul13,0,48037 07.story?coll=sfla-sports-headlines
DETROIT · By no means are the Marlins resigned to dealing A.J. Burnett before month's end, but that hasn't stopped suitors from lining up for the prospective free agent.
The Padres, White Sox and Blue Jays are the latest trio of contending clubs to express serious interest in the hard-throwing right-hander. Marlins scout Gene Watson was in Chicago over the weekend for the A's-White Sox series, and the Padres scouted Burnett's 14-strikeout outing last week in South Florida.
Of the three, it's the Blue Jays, reeling from the recent loss of ace Roy Halladay to a leg injury, who could wind up providing the best match.
The Marlins are known to covet Toronto's rookie left-hander Gustavo Chacin, and a major league source said Tuesday the Blue Jays would be willing to part with him in a deal for Burnett. The key would be getting Burnett signed to a contract extension during a 72-hour negotiating window.
"If [Toronto] could sign Burnett, the deal would get done now," the source said.
While the Orioles have been portrayed as having the best chance to sign Burnett during the season, due mainly to his wife's Maryland roots, the Blue Jays should not be discounted.
Jays pitching coach Brad Arnsberg is one of Burnett's closest friends, dating to their partnership with the Marlins in 2002-03. What's more, Blue Jays ownership has authorized General Manager J.P. Ricciardi to increase the club's payroll from $50 million to an average of $80 million the next two seasons.

The rumor now seems to be AJ to the White Sox for McCarthy and Marte... GM Kenny Williams doesn't want to upset the chemistry, but YOU KNOW the guy is chomping at the bit to wheel and deal...
From Baltimore Sun...
The hole will not be filled by Florida Marlins starter A.J. Burnett, who is not being courted by the Orioles anymore because they feel that he'll play for them for only two months and then sign a lucrative free-agent deal elsewhere. One industry source described the proposed deal of prospect Hayden Penn, outfielder Larry Bigbie and relievers Jorge Julio and Steve Kline for Burnett and third baseman Mike Lowell as "stone cold dead."

I'd be doing all I can to get this guy... Just can't see the Reds trading him to Houston, but then again nothing the Reds do would surprise me...
Dunn in dark about trade talk
By Hal McCoy
Dayton Daily News
Adam Dunn barely reached the tunnel to the Cincinnati Reds clubhouse when he arrived at Dodger Stadium on Monday and a camera was in his face and broadcaster Charley Steiner asked, "Are you going to be traded?"
Dunn gave his best mystified shrug and said, "How do I know?"
His name surfaces everywhere, but Cincinnati Reds General Manager Dan O'Brien steadfastly says Dunn is one of the young core players and won't be traded.
"I wish they'd tell me," Dunn said. "I really do. Nobody has said that to me . . . or anything. I keep getting asked about getting traded and all I can say is, 'I don't know, I really don't know.' "
If it is true that O'Brien doesn't want to trade Dunn or Austin Kearns or Wily Mo Pena, isn't it time to offer Dunn a multi-year contract before he goes to arbitration this winter and is awarded $9 million?
There has been no talk from O'Brien about a long-term deal for anybody, especially Dunn, who said he would love to do a deal and one might get done for three years at, oh, $22 million or so.
"I haven't heard a word about that, either," Dunn said. "It confuses me and, I mean, I don't know. I don't know what's going on. A long-term deal is something I'd definitely love to have. I'd love to stay here."
O'Brien said he plans to stay consistent with club policy not to talk contract extensions, but did say about Dunn, "That's an off-season possibility. We just aren't going to do it during the season because too often it creates a distraction."
First baseman Sean Casey is the subject of an unfounded rumor out of New York that he might be traded to the Mets.
He's heard them.
"Danny Graves (former Reds closer) called me the other day and said, 'Hey, get ready, you're joining us in New York.' He said it is all over the papers and talk radio."
Casey hopes it isn't true.
"Those rumors come and go and I hope that one goes," said Casey, who will make $8.5 million next year. "I'd like to stay here, but they have to do what they have to do."
If the Reds traded Casey, Dunn could be moved to first base, leaving Ken Griffey Jr., Kearns and Pena in the outfield.
The one player the Reds would like to move is infielder Rich Aurilia and there is lukewarm interest in Los Angeles.
"I've heard that Paul DePodesta (Dodgers GM) is looking to get some help to win the NL West," Aurilia said. "I could help that team."
A week ago the Dodgers were 8½ games behind San Diego, but the Padres lost seven straight and LA moved to within 5½ games of first place entering Monday's game against the Reds.

I'd like to see what the Pittsburgh Pirates deem a prospect... Ty Wiggington?? 27-year-old Larry Bigbie?? LOL
Possible Deal: Bigbie For Lawton
By Jorge Arangure Jr.
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, July 26, 2005; Page E06
BALTIMORE, July 25 -- The Baltimore Orioles' desire to shore up their outfield has them focused on Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Matt Lawton. The teams have spoken several times about Lawton, according to two baseball sources. To obtain Lawton, 33, Baltimore would send outfielder Larry Bigbie, whom the Pirates covet.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Twins may be interested in Alfonso Soriano. The Twins reportedly spoke to the Rangers about a potential trade yesterday, and would be willing to part with J.C. Romero, Kyle Lohse and/or Joe Mays.

I'm not sure where they would play him and how much, but Huff the one fit that makes a lot of sense for the White Sox. Not so sure about them giving up Marte though. I do think him and Czar Ozzie don'y always see eye-to-eye.
With Sunday's non-waiver trade deadline approaching, no moves by the Rays are imminent.
The White Sox have been scouting Rays 1B Aubrey Huff for about a week and also are interested in Marlins RHP A.J. Burnett. Chicago 22-year-old RHP Brandon McCarthy is believed to figure in those discussions.
The Rays are believed to be interested in McCarthy and White Sox LHP Damaso Marte.
Meanwhile, the Marlins are looking at Rays LHP Trever Miller and RHP Danys Baez, and the Padres and Nationals have inquired about about Rays SS Julio Lugo.

After blogging earlier this morning about how the Mariners young pitching and overall youth movement was a step in the right direction, Jorge Campillo took the hill tonight for his first MLB start and immediately strained his right elbow causing him to leave after just 1 inning. RH Jeff Harris did throw 5 excellent innings of relief but the injury to Campillo combined with Ryan Franklin's suspension leaves this week's rotation scrambled. Joel Pineiro probably avoids AAA now and Jamie Moyers start has been pushed back from tomorrow to Saturday.

Moyer will not pitch until Saturday as the Mariners are piecing together their jigsaw-puzzle rotation, the Seattle Times reports. Ryan Franklin (suspended), Aaron Sele (released), Joel Pineiro (expected to be demoted) and Jorge Campillo (injured) have thrown the rotation into a mess. Moyer will be pushed back a few days to pitch Saturday. Meche will throw Wednesday on his normal schedule. Ace prospect Felix Hernandez will start Thursday. Friday is in question as Pineiro is scheduled.

At least they get Hernandez in the rotation now. No reason to keep him in AAA any longer. He should be fun to watch.

Last night's injury to 26 year old starter Jorge Campillo doesn't sound real good:
Jorge Campillo said the pain he felt Tuesday in his elbow was unlike the previous minor elbow pain he has had, the Seattle Times reports. Campillo, making his first career start, said he has had pain in the same area before, but that this felt different, felt strange, felt like "I couldn't pitch." He flew back to Seattle to have an MRI.

And Jamie Moyer with back stiffness...Yikes, where does it end for this team
Moyer musings
Moyer was scheduled to start last night, but will not start this series because of stiffness in his lower back. He's expected to start Saturday in Chicago, meaning Gil Meche will start tonight, followed by Hernandez and Joel Pineiro. Moyer said he had never experienced lower-back stiffness during his lengthy career.
"I'd rather be precautionary and smart about it," Moyer said. "I don't want a setback. That's my biggest thing."
As to the rumors that Moyer vetoed a trade to Houston before the non-waiver deadline passed, he dismissed most of the talk as "speculation." "The way I look at this whole thing is, I signed a contract with the Seattle Mariners," Moyer said. "I've enjoyed playing here for nine years. I feel like I've done everything in my power to put forth an effort to this organization, to my teammates, to myself, the whole picture. This is where I want to play. The 10-5 thing was something that I earned. It's a right that I have."
Moyer has a no-trade clause under the 10-5 rule, which means he has 10 years of major-league experience and has played the last five years with the same team.
Asked yesterday what the Mariners said to him last week, Moyer said he was asked about his interest in a particular team. All signs point to Houston. Moyer can still be traded if he clears waivers, but said that isn't his focus now.
"I'm employed by the Seattle Mariners," he said. "I feel indebted to the ballclub. To create energies and focuses in another direction, when it's a what-if, just doesn't make any sense.
"The way I look at it, I have the ability to listen. And from there, I also have the ability to say no in a respectful way. I'm playing right here, right now, for today."

The King debuts... Note 85-pitch count, if backing the 5-inning line might be way to go...
Hernandez also used breaking balls when behind in counts, mixing fastballs that topped out at 97 mph with curveballs that bit like sarcasm and changeups that hung as if suspended in midair. He threw 81 pitches in five innings, giving up three hits and two runs (one earned), while striking out four, walking two and hitting one.
"He got better as he went along," manager Mike Hargrove said. "The good ones do that."
And here's the really crazy part. Gonzalez caught Hernandez regularly in Class AAA Tacoma, and the Hernandez he saw yesterday was not Hernandez at his best. Gonzalez said the youngster "did not have his best stuff today," was "a little hyper" and "had trouble commanding his fastball."

I just wanted to post this article because it's a topic of debate around Chicago.
LOS ANGELES -- Here come the rumors.
You knew, at some point, they had to come. You could feel them lurking down Addison Street alleys, behind Cubby Bear bars. You were simply waiting for the "dust" to settle, waiting for the trade deadline to pass. Waiting for that one Chicago columnist to break the rumor.
You had no idea the rumor would break from the Left.
From L.A.
"A person 'close to' Dusty Baker said..."
Wrigley Field
Something's rotten in Chicago if you think Dusty really wants to go to L.A.
Then, following that in the L.A. Times story, the words "unhappy," "wants to go," "desperately" and "if." Dusty Baker desperately wants to manage the Dodgers. He is unhappy in Chicago and wants to go to Los Angeles if Jim Tracy (the current Dodgers' manager) leaves at the end of this year.
Here we go.
For months, damn near since the beginning of the third week of the season, the lynch mob has been out, looking for Dusty Baker to exit Chicago, stage left. GT*O. Give the Cubs and their losing ways back to the city, because this "expectation of winning and not having it happen" is taking a toll.
"We can't live like this," is the attitude being painted. Jim Fregosi is never around when you need him, is he?
When Dusty came to Chi, he came basically for one reason: To turn Sammy Sosa into Barry Bonds. For years, Dusty had managed Bonds masterfully in San Fran. And somehow, Baker was able to get out of Bonds -- and the Giants -- a trip to keep playing ball in October.
The Cubs wanted that. The Cubs needed that.
The Tribune Co. (the team's owner) made the move. "In Dusty We Trust" signs lined Wrigleyville. The Cubs were one Steve Bartman out away from beating the Boston Red Sox to the punch.
Now, the subtle campaign to get the dude out is about to start. In a city where the motto is "Vote Early and Vote Often," the media's master plan to get Dusty Baker outta here is like a KRS classic, and it began long before the L.A. Times broke that story on Sunday.
*****
Here's where the racist in me comes out.
On Sunday morning, during the "Sports Unplugged" radio show on Power 92 (92.3 FM) in Chicago, I basically "forgot about the game and spit the truth."
I did the Skinny Black.
In a conversation about "media fairness" and Dusty Baker, I said this:
"The media sets the agenda for how the public responds to nonobjective matters and to how the audience often forms an opinion on certain issues. In sports, in this town, those opinions are often -- if not always -- set by columnists. Sports columnists, not sports reporters. Reporters are nonobjective in this matter, although the editors do have 'angle control' over copy. Columnists, they are the ones who shape public opinion. Now ... how many black sports columnists do we have in this city? How many are at the Sun-Times? How many at the Trib?"
None, was the answer I was given.
"And what about sports-talk radio?"
I looked at my two co-hosts, Leon Rogers and Steve Bardo, and asked the over-obvious question to Johnnie Cochran my point home.
"Outside of the two hours on Sunday morning that we have, and outside of Jonathan Hood on 'The Score' (WSCR-AM), how many black sports-talk shows do we have in the city? What? One?"
Leon began to hum the "We Shall Overcome" spiritual. Everyone in the studio busted out laughing.
The Ralph Wiley in me wouldn't leave.
"Trust me, the man has kept two raggedy-ass teams playing .500 ball for two seasons. Yet the columnists and radio hosts in the city want him out."
I pulled back from the mike. Looked at them, the Chicago version of the 2 Live Stews.
"It's our job ... to have Dusty's back."
As I write this column on Monday night from Los Angeles, 2,000 miles and almost 48 hours later, I still believe, right or wrong, that I have no other choice.
*****
If asked, Dusty Baker would say I was wrong.
Dusty Baker
Dusty may read between the lines, but he's not going to tell you what he sees.
He would be the first to say that the media, in the negative stories and head-hunting articles printed about his management of the Cubs, have no racial motive at all.
He'd be the first to remind me that in Boston, the media did the same thing to Terry Francona -- even this year, only months after he made history.
Anything but color, he'd tell you. His being black has nothing to do with the rumors.
But I don't speak for Dusty Baker.
He's been through this, knows the game, knows this comes with the territory. None of this -- the rumors, the unsupportive press -- fazes him.
Like he said in his calmest demeanor in his public statement after the rumor broke, "I seem to be in more rumors than somebody in Hollywood. I didn't sign here for four years to be thinking about going somewhere else. I'm here [in Chicago], and I want to win here, for the Cubs, the front office, the town."
As far as the now-published rumors that he wants to leave...
"I don't know where these [rumors] come from."
They come from them, Dust. They come from certain members of the 312 area-code media who quietly would like to see someone else at the helm of the organization that best reps America's national pastime. Someone who looks and acts more like them. Someone who won't make the comment: "We were brought over here to work in the heat. Isn't that history?" as you did two years ago, talking about us people.
Not that the West Coast rumor was made up, and not that this "close friend" doesn't exist -- but the first tactic all media outlets use is to paint a bad picture to justify future actions.
I've been through this. I know this game. I know the territory this comes with.
Jay Mariotti wrote in the Sun-Times last week (before the L.A. Times piece dropped), "Just take your toothpicks, wristbands and perpetual pout and head to a nice, safe broadcast booth somewhere. Now." And he followed it up with, "[Baker is] causing citywide debates on whether or not he's emotionally equipped for the job... "
I read between those lines.
I noticed how none of the other above-the-fold columnists came to Dusty's defense. Not Rick Morrissey, not Mike Downey or Carol Slezak or Greg Couch, not even my good friend Rick Telander. Not that they're supposed to, but ... they ain't we.
They don't feel your struggle, Dusty.
Or the fact that what you've done in the last two-plus years for this cursed organization is just short of the name Smokey Robinson called his crew. Name another manager who can come to a losing franchise, make the playoffs in his first year and then deal with the following: the sellout and meltdown of Sosa with everything from a corked bat to a trade; the loss of Moises Alou to the Giants, only to watch him hit .328 this season; the acquisition of, but not the use of (because of injury), Nomar Garciaparra; a rotation without the two best pitchers in the league (Mark Prior and Kerry Wood), on which the organization has bankrolled the franchise; the failure of the center fielder of the future, Corey Patterson, who has been sent down to the minors -- probably for good -- because of his inability to establish himself as a leadoff man (or even someone who can hit sixth).
Here's the math: Five All-Stars down at once, on one roster.
Yes, Dusty, you have the second-best player in baseball in D. Lee, and Aramis Ramirez is doing some damage; but you don't have one Cub pitcher who is in the top 10 in victories, ERA, saves or innings pitched (Carlos Zambrano is seventh in strikeouts).
Yet ... still ... in spite of ...
You are four games out of the wild-card race. Playing .500 baseball. In contention.
Yet ... still ... in spite of ...
They expect you to be better than the Cardinals and the Astros.
Yet ... still ... in spite of ...
The Cubs have manager issues ... according to "a citywide debate."
And the color of your skin, Dust, has nothing to do with this, right?
Cool.
If so, then I apologize.
But in the words of the great racial philosopher Charles Barkley: I may be wrong ... but I doubt it.
*****
The truth is that Dusty Baker is going nowhere soon. The Cubs will not make a move on him until his contract is up. They recognize all that Dusty has done, and what he's had to go through to get it done.
Plus, they don't want "Ty Willingham: the Sequel" to jump off.
But what rumor will be next? In L.A., I'm waiting for Dodgers GM Paul DePodesta to say that he's talked to Dusty Baker's "close" friend, who will have told him, when the season has ended, that Dusty can "no longer tolerate Chicago." And that he's ready to move back home.
In Chi, I'll be waiting on the headline: "Cub Brass Jim Hendry and Andy MacPhail Meet with Baker To Discuss Future."
By then, the master plan will have worked; and once again, in the eyes of the local media, everything in Cubdom will be white ... I mean right.
As it should be.
The only question left to ask will be this: If it were Bobby Cox and not Dusty Baker, would I have ever had to write this column?

If I were Dusty I would want to go back to the Dodgers also. Hell, he has pretty much ruined the best starting pitching staff in the bigs. At least when he ruins the dodgers staff, it will be easier to get by without them because Dodgers Stadium is a much better pitchers park than Wrigley Field, lol
"Lets get it on!"

The writer of that article is certainly saying something else other than just firing Dusty. He basically openly comes out and claims racism...I'm not saying the article is right or wrong. I just thought it deserved some comment. Thats true about Dusty though, they really don't like what he's doing with the Cubs in Chicago.

This is the reason Dusty Baker gets so much grief in Chicago..He says stuff like this.
In addressing Rafael Palmeiro's suspension for steroid use, Baker quoted the philosophy of one of his former players, ex-Cub and Giants outfielder Glenallen Hill.
"Every man must rake their own leaves,'" Baker said.
Like most, Baker was surprised and said he's "disappointed" for Palmeiro because all the work he has put in over the years now will be questioned. As for the theory that the eight steroid suspensions are only the tip of the iceberg, Baker wondered aloud if there is a "fool-proof test" for steroids and "if there's such a thing as a false positive [test result]."
Most suspended players, including Palmeiro, maintained they were using supplements. Asked if it would be better for major leaguers simply to stop taking supplements altogether, Baker said: "It wouldn't kill baseball, but supplements are here to stay. They are in our society. There are weight loss supplements, weight gain supplements, supplements to reduce cholesterol, supplements to reduces high blood pressure. That's a big, big industry in our society."
Baker said when he was younger, he took ginseng for energy and liquid protein to get stronger.
Did it work?
"Not really, man," he said, laughing.
Watching and waiting
Baker said left fielder Matt Murton would sit against Mets left-hander Tom Glavine on Friday, but will play Saturday against lefty Kazuhisa Ishii. Baker said he would try to get Murton at-bats, but he doesn't plan to platoon him with Matt Lawton, as he did with Todd Hollandsworth.
"We're trying to get to the playoffs, so we're going to play whoever I think the best lineup is against that particular guy," he said.
First off Who quotes Glen Allyn Hill and second I didn't know you can get heart medication over the counter.. There's a difference between Perscription Drugs and Dietary Supplements.

But he fails to make a double switch taking Prior out of the game in the fifth yesterday as Wertz and his ONE major league at bat lead off the next inning. In a pennant race where every out matters...
