American League @ National League

All-Star games arent the easiest games to handicap but theres a spot here tonight that figures to provide a winning advantage. Tonights starters Chris Sale (AL) & Max Scherzer (NL) have had dominant first halves and could very well leave their trips to the mound tonight in a 0-0 tie. If theres an edge over those first 2-3 innings, it could go to the NL offense. Sale will face a lineup tonight constructed of 6 right handed bats and three left handed. Its not strange to see that hes handling LHs to a .206 BA / .288 OPS / .654 OPS but his numbers against righties are even better .197 / .240 / .554. The problem for Sale could be that the three lefties in the NL starting order are shredding LH pitching this season. Leadoff hitter Charlie Blackmon owns a .326 / .370 / .967 line against southpaws while #3 hitter Bryce Harper has a .310 / .370 / .810 and #5 hitter Daniel Murphy has posted a .338 / .392 / .936 mark. Stuffed in between and around these three are Giancarlo Stanton (.284 / .392 / 1.079), Buster Posey (.369 / .448 / 1.067) & Nolan Arrenado (.412 / .441 / 1.235). This top six in the lineup represent an onslaught of ultra-impressive offense against left handed pitching this season and while Sale is no ordinary left hander, this is a monster task.

Scherzer on the other hand has put up even crazier numbers even though he faces opposing lineups with a pitcher on most nights. Lefties are hitting .206 off of him with a .288 OBP and .654 OPS which is weak but he has absolutely buried right handed sticks (.119 / .157 / .369) with a 15.6:1 K-BB ratio. The first five hitters in the AL lineup tonight are righties including the Astros trio of #1 Jose Altuve, George Springer at cleanup and Carlos Correa in the five hole. Tough assignment for the AL offense who will likely be happy to see the innings monitor on Scherzer expire and get to face a new arm.

Each team is loaded offensively tonight and theyre pretty equal on pitching and replacement players as well. The NL does have a matchup opportunity to get out to an early lead and at -1.10 this looks like a play thats worth a look. Going to side with the home team on the 5 inning line tonight at the short -1.10 price.
Recommendation: National League -1.10 (1st Half / 5 inning Line)
