The Tigers placed second baseman Carlos Guillen (right calf strain) and outfielder Magglio Ordoņez (right ankle fracture) on the 15-day disabled list today.
Guillen and Ordoņez were both injured in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Blue Jays at Comerica Park. Guillen was injured while attempting to cover first base. Ordoņez fractured his ankle trying sliding into home plate in the third inning and is expected to be out six to eight weeks.
Tigers athletic trainer Kevin Rand said Guillen has a "mild to moderate calf strain" and said he was "hopeful that with treatment the week that we're away when we come back he'll be able to do some baseball activities."
Rand said Ordoņez was scheduled to have a CT scan today.
The Tigers also purchased the contracts of infielder Will Rhymes and first baseman/third baseman Jeff Larish from Triple-A Toledo this morning.
Larish, who was hitting .275 with 15 home runs, 21 doubles and 55 RBI in 84 games with the Mud Hens, will be the designated hitter for the first game of a doubleheader with the Blue Jays today.
Rhymes is slated to start the second game at second base. Hell wear No.28 and will be making his major league debut. He was batting .304 with 54 runs scored, 19 doubles, 34 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 88 games with the Mud Hens.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Larish and Rhymes, the Tigers released righthanded pitcher Billy Buckner and designed the contract for righthanded pitcher Casey Fien for assignment.
