Tuesday MLB Pitching Notes

Tom Glavine – Atlanta Braves – Glavine will experience another career first tonight, while the 42-year-old will pitch off the disabled list for the first time.  I think you can be concerned on how effective he’ll be tonight against the Washington Nationals.  Glavine stated "There's still going to be some concerns for me, going out there, not having been out there in a while — that I might feel too strong or my command might not be where I want it to be."  In my mind, command is the real issue tonight, because if the crafty veteran doesn’t have it he’s more apt to struggle.  No question, Glavine is a ‘feel or ‘touch’ pitcher and it will be interesting if that golden ‘feel’ is there.  In addition, his stamina will be an issue as well, while the Braves don’t exactly have the deepest bullpen around.  I think it makes sense to look against the Braves tonight or perhaps OVER the total, depending on how you feel about Tim Redding for the Nationals.

Tim Lincecum – San Francisco Giants – I backed Lincecum in virtually every start when he reached the big leagues last year.  The results were eventually choppy as he was somewhat overwhelmed down the stretch.  For whatever reason, I’ve somehow overlooked him this season, which is especially frustrating.  Even more, when you look at the Giants record of 4 or 5-0 in his starts.  (Note the first game against the Dodgers where he entered the game in relief after being scratched for a weather scare)  Of course, the young gun's been phenomenal with a 1.23 ERA, 36/14 SO/BB ratio.  Take a stern note as well, Lincecum added a couple of pitches this year to compliment his high-90’s sick heat.  Lincecum noted recently “I went from a two-pitch guy coming up, to a four-pitch guy now.”  Yes, the hitters around Major League Baseball should be concerned.  A bit of trepidation with Lincecum tonight after he dealt a 121 pitches last out, but the numbers and match-ups scream UNDER the total tonight in San Francisco.

Greg Smith – Oakland A’s – Well, yesterday I touched on how the A’s are so sharp in what they’re consistently doing to build their baseball team.  Smith is another example of the ‘intangible’ factor the A’s fluidly find.  By many accounts, Smith is an extremely intelligent pitcher.  Obviously, when you look at his minor league numbers it’s difficult to get excited, but he understands how to get the opposition out.  (Note, Smith known for the best pick-off move in the minor leagues as a perfect example)  Smith can probably be favorably compared to Jamie Moyer or Kenny Rogers.  The A’s are 4-0 when he takes the mound and Smith is yet to allow over three earned runs in a game, while his peripheral numbers stand up.  What you like about when betting on a pitcher like Smith, you usually get your cash worth because they’re diligently and deftly prepared.  The UNDER makes sense tonight with two southpaws that match-up well against the opposition.
