Worst of the Worst
Phoenix Coyotes - New GM Don Maloney promised to take a slow and steady approach in trying to rebuild the franchise and with the Coyotes playing in an extremely tough Pacific Division, this has the potential to be a very long year for the Coyotes. Phoenix has not done much of anything to improve their team besides bringing in retread goalies Alex Auld and David Aebischer to fight with Mikael Tellqvist and David LeNeveu for playing time. The Coyotes lost Yanic Perreault, Owen Nolan, Jeremy Roenick and Kevyn Adams to free agency or trades and I expect this team to finish at the bottom of the Western Conference.
Columbus Blue Jackets - The Blue Jackets started over at the beginning of last season firing Head Coach Gerard Gallant and General Manager Doug MacLean. New GM Scott Howson and Head Coach Ken Hitchcock will sort out the team this year and by the second half of this season, the Blue Jackets could look completely different. Columbus starts up front with power forward Rick Nash. Beyond that, the Blue Jackets are going to struggle scoring goals like they did in 2006 finishing with the second-lowest goal total in the NHL. There is no question that Ken Hitchcock is a great coach, but he will have to do his best work yet this season. Lucky for the Blue Jackets, the Phoenix Coyotes and the Edmonton Oilers reside in the Western Conference. Columbus will be one of the bottom feeders in the West.
Edmonton Oilers - Some experts would say that injuries killed this team last year as Ales Hemsky missed 18 games, Jarret Stoll missed 31 games and Ethan Moreau missed 75 which resulted in Edmonton finishing dead last in goals scored in the NHL. I say that this team is just not very good. They spent a fortune on two players (Dustin Penner who is coming off of one solid season and defensemen Sheldon Souray who is a major defensive liability) in the offseason and lost team leaders Ryan Smyth and Jason Smith. This will be a very young team this season up front and with virtually no veterans up front, expect this team to struggle scoring once again.
