Finding value with phenom Max Scherzer
Max Scherzer is a ‘can’t miss’ prospect.  He was the Diamondbacks first round draft choice (#11 overall) in the 2006 draft.  Splitting time between Single A and Double A farm teams last year, Scherzer struck out 106 batters in 90.2 innings, while allowing only 69 hits.  Sent to Triple A for some seasoning out of spring training this year, Scherzer was nearly unhittable: four starts, 23 innings of work, 12 hits and three earned runs allowed, 38 strikeouts and only three walks.

Arizona called him up and in his MLB debut, relieving the struggling Edgar Gonzalez, Scherzer threw 4.1 innings of perfect baseball, striking out seven of the thirteen batters that he faced.  No surprise then, that when manager Bob Melvin announced that Scherzer would be taking Gonzalez’s spot in the rotation, the betting marketplace was rather eager to support him.

Scherzer was a -145 favorite against the Phillies in his starting debut on Monday.  As is often the case with young pitchers, the hype didn’t quite live up to the performance.  He was in trouble in each of the first three innings: hitting batters, throwing wild pitches, giving up big hits in key situations.  It took 92 pitches for Scherzer to get through four innings against the Phillies, giving up ten baserunners and five runs in the process.  The D-backs lost 11-4.

I remember this happened last year with Tim Lincecum of the San Francisco Giants, the biggest 'hyped' rookie pitcher May call up.  Lincecum had put up some sick numbers at the minor league level.  Opening up the ’07 season at AAA Fresno, Lincecum went 4-0 with an 0.29 ERA in five starts, striking out 46 batters in 31 innings.

Lincecum struggled in his MLB debut, then reeled off three consecutive quality starts in his next three outings.  The betting market went nuts in support of him, but his consistency wasn't there yet -- each of his next five starts were losses. The betting market cooled off on Lincecum and voila -- Lincecum and/or the Under were strong plays for the rest of the season.

Look at Lincecum this year -- 2nd in the NL in ERA, 5-2 to the Under, with the 14-19 Giants 5-2 in his seven starts....

The Phillies Cole Hamels was the 'hyped' May rookie callup in '06.  At Triple A Scranton, prior to his callup, Hamels had an 0.39 ERA, with a 36:1 strikeout to walk ratio.  However, once he got to the big leagues, Hamels got shellacked early and often.  Philly was 2-5 in his first seven starts and Hamels had a 5.50 ERA during that span.

By August, Hamels had settled down into a consistent rhythm -- ten of his last eleven starts of the '06 campaign were quality starts, and the Phillies went 8-3 in those ballgames.  By his second season in the league in '07, he was one of the best pitchers in the NL: 15-5 with a 3.39 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP pitching at hitter friendly Citizens Bank Ballpark; 177 strikeouts in 183 innings of work.

No, Monday night wasn't Scherzer's best outing, and the price to support him was extremely high.  Hopefully, the betting marketplace will cool on this guy a little bit if he has a few more outings like Monday night, and we'll get great value supporting him later in the season...
