Arizona +110 at Calgary O/U 5.5
The Calgary Flames snapped an ugly 7-game losing streak by beating Edmonton 3-2 in their last game but they were very lucky to do so. The Flames got out to a early lead because of terrible goaltending by Edmonton netminder Cam Talbot and had to hang on for dear life to win as the Oilers dominated the last two periods especially the third period but just couldn't find a way to tie up that game. Betting against Calgary repeatedly since they were officially eliminated from playoff contention has been a staple of my recent handicapping in the NHL and I will try my chances once again betting against a demoralized and injury riddled Calgary team tonight minus TJ Brodie and Travis Hamonic two key starting defensemen on their blue line as well as forwards Sean Monahan, Matthew Tkachuk and Kris Versteeg. Flames goalie Mike Smith finally played one of his better games in net for Calgary in that win over Edmonton on Saturday night but he's been lacking consistency and the ability to follow up a good start with another one all season long. On the flip side, the full season record may indicate that Arizona is a bottom feeder but they haven't been playing like one recently. The Coyotes are 16-10 in their last 26 games and have won three of their last four games and beaten good teams in the process notching quality wins against Vegas, Tampa Bay and St. Louis. The latter victory was an extremely impressive 6-0 thrashing over the Blues who are in desperate need of points to try to qualify for the playoffs right now. You can make an argument that Arizona goalie Antti Raanta may be the goalie in the best current form right now in the NHL. Arizona is 8-1 in Raanta's last 9 starts and he has a sparkling 1.34 GAA and .956 save percentage during that span including that shutout win on Saturday night against the St. Louis Blues. Calgary owns one of the worst home records in the NHL at 16-23. Wrong team favored here!
