Georgetown vs Coppin State Analysis
Coppin State kicked off their season yesterday facing Charlotte losing by 23 to the 49ers. Sam Sessoms led the team with 24 points and will be they key player for Georgetown to lockup come their game tonight.
The Eagles showed their inability to share the ball creating only six assists as a team and will need to improve upon that if they want any shot of keeping it close with the Hoyas. Will Georgetown cover as 17.5-point favorites? Let’s dive in!
Hopeful Hoyas
Georgetown had one of their worst men’s basketball seasons in history last season going 6-25 including a dismal 0-19 in conference play!
To help improve those numbers, the Hoyas welcome eight transfers including Brendan Murray from LSU and Jay Heath from Arizona State. Another transfer is quite familiar to Georgetown fans as senior Qudus Wahab makes his way back to Washington D.C. after a season with Maryland. In his time with the Hoyas he averaged nine points and six rebounds per game.
Another transfer who looks to make an instant impact on defense is Akok Akok from UConn averaging almost two blocks per game standing at 6’10. Have all these players had enough time together before their regular season kicking off tonight?
Crushed Coppin State
As mentioned, the Eagles already dropped their opener yesterday against Charlotte as they look to bounce back from last season going 9-23.
They’ll need improved bench play if they want to compete with Georgetown as the Eagles only had three total field goals made from their bench against Charlotte.
As a counter, the Eagles also need to play better defense against the opposing team’s bench as they allowed Charlotte’s bench to shoot 9-16 from the field yesterday. Coppin State might have some trouble inside on both offense and defense as their tallest starter stands at just 6’8 in senior Justin Winston.
Sessoms can’t do it all so if the Eagles are going to cover as 17.5-point underdogs, he’ll need help from either Winston or sophomore guard Nendah Tarke.
Georgetown vs Coppin State Prediction
Considering Coppin State already played in a game and got blown out yesterday, their spirits and energy may be low. Let’s roll with the Hoyas to win by at least 17.5 points as they want to bust out of the gates with a big home win.
Sure, the Hoyas have a bunch of players with little time playing together but these transfers are experienced and I don’t see much of a learning curve at least in their first game with Coppin State. Expect a little sloppy play from Georgetown to start out but in the end cover the 17.5 points.
Prediction: Georgetown Hoyas -17.5
