Pepperdine vs Nevada Analysis
Pepperdine heads into their home matchup against Nevada undefeated at home this season. Their only losses have come at Cal State Fullerton and at UCLA.
Nevada has been good so far this season but are coming off being outright upset against Loyola Marymount by 12 when listed as 2.5-point favorites to win.
In that game the Wolfpack only scored 11 points in the final 15 minutes with Kenan Blackshear and Jarod Lucas combining to go only 8-24 shooting in the game.
The Waves looked strong in their last game before their matchup with the Wolfpack, beating Northern Arizona by 19 while listed as a 9.5-point favorite. Who will win this Mountain West vs WCC clash with Pepperdine currently listed as 1-point favorites? Lets dive in.
WolfPack Look To Turn Woes Around
Blackshear has been the best all around player for Nevada so far this season averaging 12 ppg, 6 rpg and 6 apg, but has only shot 40% from the field and commits three turnovers per game.
Lucas is the team’s leading scorer at 17.2 ppg, but doesn’t contribute much else where besides the free throw line where he’s made 40 of 46 attempts so far. As a team the Wolfpack are 8th nationally in free throw attempts per game and 29th in free throw shooting percentage.
If Nevada wants a shot at winning this game 7’0 junior center Will Baker must put in a better showing than he did against Loyola Marymount in which he only contributed two points in 19 minutes. In his three games prior Baker had scored between 14-20 points in each contest.
The Wolfpack as a team excel on the defensive end ranking in the top 50 nationally in effective field goal percentage allowed, 3 pt shooting percentage allowed, 2pt field goal percentage allowed and blocks.
Pepperdine Producing From Deep
Pepperdine hopes to use their uptempo offense to get passed the Wolfpack ranking 48th in overall adjusted tempo and 10th in quickest possession length. If it wasn’t for their 100-53 blow out loss to UCLA much of Pepperdine’s defensive metrics would look much better.
Besides that game the most points they’ve allowed in any game is the 74 they allowed in their loss to Cal State Fullerton back on November 11th. Sophomore forward Maxwell Lewis is their go-to scorer putting up 18 ppg to go along with 6 rpg and 3 apg.
He also adds a block and steal per game while shooting 63% from the field, 80% from the free throw line and 50% from beyond the arch this season. 6’10 center Carson Basham will match up with Baker down low averaging 7 ppg, 4 rpg and a block per game.
The one thing that hurts the Waves is their inexperience ranking 317th nationally in player experience. Other positive metrics for the Waves include ranking 12th nationally in effective fg percentage, 11th in 3pt percentage and 60th in 2pt percentage.
Pepperdine vs Nevada Prediction
With the line moving in the Waves favor, get it now while it’s at -1 or -2 before it goes too far. Pepperdine is stellar at home and have momentum in their favor heading in.
Lewis scored 30 points in Pepperdine’s last game going 12-19 from the field as he looks to keep that hot scoring up figuring to be the game’s star player heading in. I’m taking the Waves to win by a score similar to 72-65.
Prediction: Pepperdine Waves -1
