Texas Tech vs South Carolina State Betting Analysis
Texas Tech closes out their regular season non-conference schedule with a game against the MEAC’s South Carolina State Bulldogs in what should be an easy win for the Red Raiders.
They’ve won five straight but all those opponents were ranked outside the KenPom top 170 and Texas Tech sits just 4-7 against the spread on the season.
That’s probably the only statistic where the Bulldogs have an edge on the Red Raiders as they sit 6-8 against the spread on the season. Can South Carolina State do enough tonight to cover as 31.5-point underdogs? Let’s find out.
Bulldogs Press For Pace On Defense
South Carolina State sits a poor 2-12 on the season and aren’t expected to do much damage in the MEAC this season. The statistic that sticks out the most for the Bulldogs is they force their opponents to play at the fastest pace of any defense in the nation.
That’s great as they attempt to force their opponents to make mistakes on offense but that just hasn’t been the case this season as South Carolina State is 352nd in adjusted defensive efficiency.
To go along with that they’re 357th in effective field goal percentage allowed, 294th in 3pt field goal percentage allowed and 358th in 2pt field goal percentage allowed.
Head Coach Erik Martin loves to utilize his bench as 9 different players average 17+ minutes per game on the season although some of those players have played less games than others.
Offensive production is led by sophomore guard Rakeim Gary who averages 11 points per game but has scored 17+ in three straight.
He’ll need to score 17+ again tonight if the Bulldogs want a shot at covering as 30+ point underdogs. Four different players on the Bulldogs’ roster average one steal or more per game as well.
Well Rounded Red Raiders
Texas Tech is coming off a 111-67 win over Houston Christian who is 351st in KenPom’s rankings while South Carolina State ranks 341st. The Huskies force opponents to play fast just like South Carolina State so we have a pretty good gauge of how this one will play out tonight.
The Red Raiders sport one of the most well-rounded teams in the nation ranking in the top 30 nationally in various categories on both sides of the ball. On offense they rank 18th in effective field goal percentage and 14th in 2pt field goal percentage.
On defense they’re 14th in forcing turnovers, 20th in steal percentage and 27th in adjusted defensive efficiency. Forward Kevin Obanor is one of the team’s star players averaging 16 points per game and six rebounds per game while shooting 53% from the field and 90% from the free throw line.
De’Vion Harmon is the team’s steals leader at 2.1 per game while Daniel Batcho holds it down inside averaging 1.7 blocks per game. This team was able to force 24 Houston Baptist turnovers and I see no reason why the Red Raiders shouldn’t be able to force 20+ turnovers again tonight.
Texas Tech vs South Carolina State Prediction
I’m always skeptical taking teams to win by 30+ as we run the risk of putting this spread in the hands of bench players at the end of the game who rarely see the floor.
I feel more comfortable taking over 148.5 as I see no reason why the Red Raiders shouldn’t be able to score 95+ points against the Bulldogs. I’m sensing a 95-60 type of score in this one.
Prediction: Over 148.5 Points Scored
