Washington vs Seattle U Analysis
We could be in store for a potential upset tonight as Seattle U makes the 10 minute trip to Alaska Airlines Arena to take on Washington.
The Huskies have rebounded nicely since losing to Cal Baptist back on Nov 17 beating both Fresno State and Saint Mary’s since then. The Redhawks haven’t played much competition to get to 5-0 but do have impressive wins over both Portland and Portland State.
The 80-68 outright win against the Pilots came with the Redhawks heading in as 3.5-point underdogs. How can Washington hold off Seattle U’s high octane offense? Let’s find out.
Washington Transfers Settling In
The Huskies held off Saint Mary’s 68-64 in Overtime in their last game in a matchup they were 10.5-point underdogs heading in. They’re not projected to be much of a threat in the Pac-12 this season and this could be a look-ahead spot with the Huskies kicking off conference play Thursday against Oregon State.
Washington will need to use their perimeter defense to keep the Redhawks at bay from the 3pt line. The Huskies rank 18th nationally in 3pt fg percentage against and 3rd in blocks lead by center Franck Kepnang and forward Keion Brooks each averaging 1.5 blocks per game or more this season.
Brooks has also averaged 15.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game in the four games he’s played this season for the Huskies. With so many transfers coming onto Washington in the offseason, they continue to improve comradery but rank a dismal 361st nationally in assists to field goals made ratio.
To put it in perspective, as a team they average 8.8 assists per game and 13.2 turnovers per game. Not good if you want to find success as a team on offense.
Redhawks Red Hot 3-Point Shooting
Seattle U’s season ended last year losing to Abilene Christian in the WAC Tournament semi finals putting them at 23-9 which in their terms is a success.
They have what it takes to win that tournament this season clinching a NCAA Tournament bid and they’ll likely do it behind the likes of their 3pt shooting. They rank 11th nationally in 3pt fg percentage and 15th in effective fg percentage.
Junior guard Cameron Tyson leads the way for Seattle U averaging a whopping 28.3 ppg including shooting over 51% from behind the 3pt line. Other notable playmakers for Seattle U include Alex Schumacher and Paris Dawson each averaging 10+ ppg.
Brandton Chatfield will attempt to balance the Redhawks offensive and defensive attack down low averaging 7.5 points and 5.8 rebounds on 77% shooting from the field.
Washington vs Seattle U Prediction
The Redhawks defense isn’t that great as they don’t generate many turnovers and opposing offenses play at a fast pace against the Redhawks. They’re efficient on offense taking up the shot clock until they get the 3pt shot they like.
They’ll likely try and run fast to get the big men on Washington tired as the Huskies rank 3rd on defense in block percentage.
Look for Seattle U to take that element away from the Huskies which will force the Huskies to play faster with smaller players. I’m eyeing an over of 141 in this game that the Redhawks have a serious shot to win.
Prediction: Over 141 Points Scored (Sprinkle Seattle U +6)
