Georgia vs Oregon Analysis
This game should be an exciting match-up for a multitude of reasons, but two things stand out to me personally more than anything. The mastermind behind this Georgia defense last season, and a few years prior, Dan Lanning, is now the coach of Georgia’s week 1 opponent.
The second reason, in his first career game as a head coach he takes on Georgia in Atlanta for the first top-25 match-up of the 2022 season!
Georgia Gunning For National Championship Repeat
Georgia looks to repeat as National Champions, but after the draft that they had, they have fallen 2 spots in the opening rankings for the AP poll. Yet, hopes are as high as ever, Georgia ended last season 14-1, the top team in the Nation, with their lone loss coming to Alabama in the SEC Championship, just a few weeks before they got their revenge in the championship.
The Bulldogs have Stetson Bennett back at QB, after putting up the 2nd best QBR in the SEC last season, and he has three of his top four targets back this year, plus an added bonus in Arik Gilbert who redshirted as a transfer last year.
Gilbert will pair with Bowers to give them one of the most dangerous TE duos in the country. The Bulldogs may have also lost their top two RB’s and seven of their top nine tacklers on defense, but this team will still produce one of the best defenses in the country.
This season’s starters may not have the “starting” experience, but they definitely have experience in the action with the amount of rotations on the defense.
Since Kirby Smart has taken over as the coach of Georgia they have gone an impressive 66-15, yet they are just 13-7 on a neutral site (w/ a 7-5 record in the regular season). Not to mention they are 24-2 against non-conference opponents (15-11 ATS).
Georgia is 11-5-1 straight up against the Pac 12 conference but just 5-5 ATS. They won their last game by just two points against Colorado in 2010 and haven’t played Oregon since they won by 11 as a 21 point favorite in 1977.
Ducks Eager For Head Coaching Debut
Oregon fans must be eagerly awaiting this season to see if Dan Lanning is one of the last pieces this team needs to get back into contention for the CFP, or if he can take their defense to the caliber that he took Georgia’s.
Lanning takes over a team that opened the season ranked 11th last year, but was 22nd to end the year with a 10-4 record last season. The Ducks lost three of the last games, including two losses in three games against Utah, but this team also has 15 returning starters and plenty of experience.
Even though they are young, especially at the offensive skill positions, with the top four RB’s and four of the top six WR’s being sophomores. While they do have plenty of returning starters, some of the experience that this team now holds was acquired through the transfer portal.
The offense adds Bo Nix at QB, while the defense solidifies the DL and adds a transfer CB to go alongside the best OL and LB core in the Pac 12.
This #11 ranked Oregon Ducks team is just 10-8 in the last four years on a neutral field, posting a record of just 2-5 ATS in those games.
They are 5-8 against the SEC (5-4 ATS), allowing 21 unanswered points in their last opportunity to blow a 15 point lead against Auburn in 2019. While the team is impressive, they are taking on the #3 ranked Georgia Bulldogs, the only team in a dominating SEC conference to go undefeated last year. Georgia allowed just 66 points in conference play last season, against top quality opponents.
Georgia vs Oregon Prediction
The Ducks lost against Utah by 31 & 28 points. There is a learning curve to be had when you have a new transfer QB and a first time HC. While this Ducks team will be impressive in my opinion, week 1 against their toughest opponent of the year is one they will be eager to forget.
Prediction: Georgia Bulldogs -17.5
