Texas vs Louisiana-Monroe Analysis
For the first time in this series we have a matchup between two FBS teams as ULM travels to the Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium to take on the 18th ranked Texas Longhorns.
These two times have faced off just 1 time before, in 2009, with Texas winning that meeting by a score of 59-20. This is the 2nd year in a row that Texas starts the year out with a Sun Belt conference opponent, taking out Louisiana 38-18 in their opener last season, resulting in their 3rd straight home opener win.
Now they go for their 4th straight home opener win as they take on an ULM team that has lost all 10 of their games against power 5 conference by an average of 34.1 PPG since 2016! Not to mention, ULM has a 0-12 record against current B12 teams.
Warhawks Not Wasting Time Improving
ULM has a multitude of returning players, and while that talent didn’t amount to much last season, yet they did make an improvement last season.
In 2020, ULM ended the season winless, but finished last season 4-8, exponentially increasing their win total from the year before. They bring back 8 returning starters on offense, which includes their field commander at the QB position.
Their offense returns their top 4 rushers, 5 of their top 6 receivers and 4 of their top 5 tacklers! This team may not be in the top caliber rankings, but they are steadily improving.
Longhorns Looking to Regroup
Texas on the other hand comes into this season as one of the most improved teams in the land, starting at their QB position with the addition of Quinn Ewers, the Ohio State transfer that is expected to lead this team to greener pastures.
The Longhorns have arguably the best RB unit in the country with Bijan Robinson as the top rated RB in the 2023 draft class, with plenty of depth behind him.
Their top-10 receiving core, headlined by Xavier Worthy, grew even stronger with the addition of Wyoming transfer, Isaiah Neyor. Robinson and Worthy both were impactful weapons on the offense last season, and earned their way into 1st team B12 honors last season.
Texas vs Louisiana-Monroe Prediction
Quinn Ewers has plenty of weapons to utilize, with plenty of experience surrounding him as well as the Longhorns have 14 returning starts on their roster and multiple experienced transfers to add to that list.
They have started the year off with a win in week one, 3 straight times and with ULM’s history against power 5 teams, I think this is a runaway win for this Texas team.
Prediction : Texas (-38.5)
Tomorrow’s Game = (17) Miami, FL vs. Bethune-Cookman
