Atlanta Braves vs Philadelphia Phillies Analysis
On Tuesday night, the Phillies and Braves face off for the first game of a two-game set. The Phillies are coming off a four-game sweep of the Pirates in Pittsburgh, and the Braves are coming off a three-game sweep of the Diamondbacks at home.
The season series between these two teams are knotted up at 5 games a piece. For this matchup, the Braves are -235 home favorites, the run line is 1.5, and the total is set at 8 runs.
Phillies Feeling Confident Lately
The Phillies are on a five-game winning streak and they are 6-4 in their last 10 games. The Phillies are in third place in the NL East and they are 6.5 games behind the Braves for second place. Philly is 29-22 on the road this year and they are 24-12 covering the run line as an underdog this season.
Nick Nelson will make the start for the Phillies tonight on the road against the Braves. This will be Nelson’s first start of the season, and Nelson is 3-1 on the year with a 3.94 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP, and a 2.95 FIP. Nelson logged an inning against the Braves last week and allowed one run on two hits and a walk in that one inning of work.
Nelson has a 5.12 ERA on the road, a .384 slugging percentage against, a 1.50 WHIP, and a 2.19 FIP. It is highly unlikely that Nelson will pitch more than three innings tonight, regardless of if the Braves hit him around or not.
Strider Solid in Rookie Season
The Braves are looking to gain ground in the NL East and take over the Mets for first place. At the moment, Atlanta is three games behind New York.
The Braves are 62-41 on the season, they are 36-21 at home, and they are 41-41 covering the run line as a favorite. Atlanta is 6-4 in their last 10 games and they have a 3.83 team ERA over this stretch.
Rookie Spencer Strider will make the start for the Braves tonight at home against the Phillies. Strider is 5-3 on the season with a 2.91 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP, and a 2.17 FIP. On 7/26, Strider faced the Phillies in Philly and allowed one run on three hits in six innings of work.
This was the second time Strider faced Philly, but it was his only start against them. At home this season, Strider has a 3.00 ERA, a .306 slugging percentage against, a 1.21 WHIP, and a 1.42 FIP.
Atlanta Braves vs Philadelphia Phillies Prediction
Strider has been great this year, and Nelson is mostly unknown, but I think we are in for a closer game than people might think. This line is skewed so heavily toward the Braves and I do not get why besides for Strider.
These teams are 5-5 head to head and they are both running red hot. I would look for the Phillies +1.5 as well as over 8 runs for this game.
Predictions: Philadelphia Phillies +1.5 / Over 8 Runs Scored
