Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins Analysis
On Thursday night, the Twins and the White Sox face off for the first game of a four-game series. The Twins lead the season series 5-1 against the White Sox and Chicago only won the last game they played by one run. For this matchup, the Twins are -165 home favorites, the run line is 1.5, and the total is set at 8.5 runs.
White Sox Woes Against Twins
The White Sox were the odds favorite to win the AL Central before the season started, and since they are under .500 and in third place, it’s safe to say they are one of the biggest disappointments in baseball.
The White Sox are 43-45, 24-20 on the road, and 21-16 covering the run line as an underdog. Chicago is 5-5 in their last 10 games and now is their chance to make up ground in the AL Central before the All-Star break.
Johnny Cueto will make the start for the White Sox on the road tonight. Cueto is 3-4 in 10 starts this season with a 2.91 ERA, a 4.11 FIP, and a 1.15 WHIP. In his last three starts, Cueto has allowed five runs on 17 hits over 20 innings of work.
One of those starts, on 7/4, was against the Twins at home and the Sox lost in extras. Cueto has a 1.74 ERA on the road, a 1.00 WHIP, and a 3.82 FIP. The Twins have a .744 OPS at home this season and a .799 OPS in July.
Gray Great at Home This Season
The Twins are in first place in the AL Central but they have also cooled down a bit as of late. Minnesota is 5-5 in their last 10 games and they are 49-41 on the season. The Twins are 26-19 at home this season and they are 24-34 covering the run line as a favorite.
Sonny Gray will make the start for the Twins tonight at home against the White Sox. Gray is 4-2 on the season with a 3.03 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP, and a 3.29 FIP. In his last three starts, Gray allowed eight runs on 13 hits over 16.2 innings of work.
Gray has been better at home this season and he is pitching to a 2.83 ERA, a 3.31 FIP, and a 1.20 WHIP. The White Sox, as a team, have a .708 OPS on the road, a .675 OPS in July, and a .656 OPS against righties this season.
Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins Prediction
The White Sox are on the borderline of the “do not bet” list due to how bad they have been this season, but I like their outlook on the run line tonight.
Sonny Gray is certainly hittable and the White Sox are better on the road this year. The Twins have Chicago’s number, but I expect the White Sox to come out hot and pull off a win today. Given the odds, I will take the White Sox +1.5 for today’s matchup.
Prediction: Chicago White Sox +1.5 -150
