Cincinnati Reds vs New York Mets Analysis
On Wednesday night, the Mets and the Reds square off for the rubber match of a three-game series. The Mets took game one 7-4 and the Reds won last night 1-0 on a walk-off sacrifice fly to center.
For the third and final matchup in this series, David Peterson will take the mound for the Mets and Graham Ashcraft will take the mound for the Reds.
Meet the Mets
The Mets had a good month of July, but they have been giving up ground in the NL East. The Mets are 50-31 and only have a 2.5-game lead over the Braves for first place. New York is 24-18 on the road this season and they are 32-26 covering the run line. The Mets are 5-5 in their last 10 games with a team batting average of just .218.
David Peterson will make the start for the Mets tonight. Peterson is 5-1 with a 3.24 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, and a 3.78 FIP. In his last three starts, Peterson has allowed five runs on 15 hits with 25 strikeouts over 18.1 innings of work. On the road this year, Peterson has a 2.17 ERA, a 3.49 FIP, and a .93 WHIP in 29 innings of work. The Mets are 4-2 in road games started by Peterson this season. The Reds have a .714 OPS against lefties and a .741 OPS at home this season.
Crafty Ashcraft
The Reds snuck out a win last night against the Mets and they are 4-6 in their last 10 games, but they have been outscored by 23 runs during this stretch. The Reds are in last place in the NL Central with a 28-52 record and they are 14-26 at home this season. As an underdog on the run line, the Reds are 30-34 covering the spread.
Righty Graham Ashcraft will make the start for the Mets tonight at home. Ashcraft is 4-2 with a 4.53 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP, and a 4.15 FIP. In his last three starts, Ashcraft allowed 15 runs and 21 hits over 15.1 innings of work. Through the course of the season, Ashcraft has been much better at home and he has a 2.59 ERA, a .99 WHIP, and a 3.65 FIP. Ashcraft started the season out much stronger, but the rookie has come down to earth as the season progressed. The Mets have a team OPS of .723 on the road and .737 against righties this season.
Cincinnati Reds vs New York Mets Prediction
The Mets were blanked last night and it is hard to imagine they get blanked again, but I do not think the Mets will be comfortable facing Ashcraft tonight. Whenever New York sees a new pitcher they always struggle. The Reds may put up a fight against Peterson, but based on this matchup, I like this game to go under the total of 10 runs.
PLAY: UNDER 10 Runs (-110)
