Houston Astros vs Seattle Mariners Game 1 Analysis
The Seattle Mariners upset the Toronto Blue Jays in the Wild Card round and they pulled off one of the craziest comebacks in postseason history.
Now, they get to take on the No. 1 seed Houston Astros who are the favorites to win the American League.
As AL West rivals, these two teams are familiar with each other, and the Astros won the season series 12-7. For this matchup, Houston is -235 home favorites, the run line is 1.5, and the total is 6.5 runs.
Seattle Sizing Up Another Upset Opportunity
The Mariners won back-to-back games against the Blue Jays and they put on a fantastic performance in the AL Wild Card. Seattle was down seven runs and they came all the way back to beat the Blue Jays in game two.
The Mariners are on a five-game winning streak dating back to the regular season and they seem to be on fire exactly when they need to be.
Seattle got a great start out of Luis Castillo but a bad start from Robbie Ray in the Wild Card round. For this matchup, the Mariners starting pitcher is currently undecided, but it is expected that it will be Logan Gilbert, Marco Gonzales, or George Kirby, who closed out the 9th inning of the Wild Card game.
Regardless of who pitches for the Mariners, they will have experience against this Astros lineup, and it will be a tall task to win in Houston against this juggernaut of a team.
Astros Aim For Big Game 1 Win
The Astors were the No. 1 seed in the American League and they are the best team in the American League. This team won 106 games this season and 55 of those wins were at home.
Houston is the favorite to win the AL for good reason. Their pitching is great, their offense is electric, and they play great defense.
Justin Verlander will make the start for the Astros to open up the series. Verlander has faced the Mariners six times this season and the Astros went 5-1 in those games.
At home this season, Verlander has a 1.64 ERA, a .201 batting average against, a .269 slugging percentage against, a 1.70 FIP, and a .88 WHIP. In what might be his final season in the Majors, Verlander has put together an absolutely phenomenal season and I expect it to continue in the postseason.
Houston Astros vs Seattle Mariners Prediction
The Mariners are on a roll, and I would love to see them win, but beating Houston in game one is a tall task. Whoever the Mariners sent to the mound will have to deal with the best team in the AL, rested and at home, so it will be a tough spot.
The moneyline is too high to back Houston, and I do not want to lay 1.5 runs, so I am looking at the total here. Despite how good these teams are on offense, I would go under the low total of 6.5 runs.
Prediction: Under 6.5 Runs Scored
