New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox Analysis
On Tuesday night, the Yankees and the Red Sox face off for a two-game series. The Yankees are coming off a 2-1 series win against the Rays, and the Red Sox are coming off a 2-1 series win against the Orioles.
This will be the 14th time these two teams play this season, and the Yankees currently lead the season series 7-6. The Yankees are -173 road favorites, the run line is 1.5, and the total is 8.5 runs.
Cole Can’t Let Up
The Yankees needed a big series against the Rays, and they were able to do just that. The Yankees have a 5.5-game lead over the Blue Jays in the AL East, and they need all the wins they can get right now to lock in the AL East title.
New York has been one of the worst teams in baseball the past three months, but if they can get hot now, they are still World Series contenders. New York is 85-56 and they are 35-34 playing on the road.
Gerrit Cole will make the start for the Yankees tonight in Boston. On the season, Cole is 11-7 with a 3.20 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP, and a 3.17 FIP. This will be the fourth time Cole faces Boston this season. On July 7th, Cole pitched against the Red Sox in Boston and allowed five runs on five hits in six innings.
Cole has been solid on the road this season. In 76 innings of work, Cole has a 3.43 ERA, a .210 batting average against, a 1.13 WHIP, and a 3.87 FIP. These are good numbers, but Cole is not as good when pitching away from Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox certainly have the chance to jump on the Yankees’ ace.
Boston Not Backing Down Yet
The Red Sox playoff hopes are hanging by a thread, and they might as well be nonexistent. Boston is 69-72 and they are 10 games back in the Wild Card.
The Sox can help the rest of the AL East by taking down the Yankees, but it seems like a lose-lose for Boston. I still expect the Red Sox to come out hot for this two-game set.
Nick Pivetta will make the start for Boston tonight. On the season, he is 9-11 with a 4.29 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP, and a 4.13 FIP. This will be his fourth time facing the Yankees this season.
In his last start at home against the Yankees, Pivetta allowed six runs on eight hits and he was bounced after just 3.2 innings. At home this season, Pivetta has a 4.76 ERA, a .272 batting average against, a 1.47 WHIP, and a 4.47 FIP.
New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox Prediction
The way this matchup goes, this game is screaming over. I have this priced at over 9.5 runs, so at over 8.5 runs, there is value.
Both of these pitchers are susceptible to getting hit and both of these line ups know the opposing pitcher. I expect runs.
Prediction: Over 8.5 -105
