Phillies vs Mets Analysis
After an absolutely stunning come from behind win in the ninth inning last night, the Mets will take on the Phillies in game two of a four-game series.
New York scored seven runs in the top of the ninth inning to take an 8-7 lead on the Phillies, and Edwin Diaz was able to shut the door for the save. For game two, the New York Mets are -145 road favorites, the run line is 1.5, and the total is set at 7 runs.
Phillies Preview
As a Phillies player, I do not know how you can’t still be in shock after how last night’s game ended. Philly had a 7-1 lead in the top of the ninth and lost the ball game.
Not only did they lose, but the loss came to their NL East rival, so that adds more insult to injury. Philly was looking at a sure win and their bullpen was unable to close the door on the Mets.
It is a new day, and Kyle Gibson will take the hill for the Phillies. In his five starts so far this season, Gibson has gone 27.2 innings allowing 10 runs, 18 hits, 12 walks, and 26 Ks.
Philly is 3-2 in all five games Gibson has started, and he has let up less than three runs in his last two outings. However, both of those outings were under six innings long.
Mets Preview
The New York Mets pulled off one of the most improbable comebacks in recent baseball memory last night. New York showed poise while down seven in the top of the ninth and they were able to complete a comeback for the ages.
Things feel different in New York this season. The Mets hit with runners in scoring position, play fundamentally sound baseball, and have one of, if not the, best rotations in baseball.
With DeGrom on the sideline with an injury, Max Scherzer is the Mets’ ace, and boy has he pitched like it this season. The Mets are 5-0 in games Scherzer has started this season.
Through five starts, Scherzer has gone 31 innings allowing just nine runs on 16 hits, nine walks, and 42 strikeouts.
Phillies vs Mets Prediction
Scherzer and the Mets have beaten the Phillies twice already this season, so it is no surprise to see the Mets as -145 favorites. The Mets are one of the best teams to back this season, but I will not be taking them on the moneyline tonight.
Instead, my bet for this game is over 3.5 runs (-105) for the first five innings of this game. Both times the Mets and Phillies played when Scherzer pitched this bet has hit, and I think today will be three games in a row.
Prediction: Over 3.5 Total Runs Scored First Five Innings (-105)
