Phillies vs Nationals Analysis
On Wednesday night, the Phillies and the Nationals face off for the second game of a three-game series. The Phillies beat up the Nationals last night with an 11-run outburst and their pitching staff did not allow a run. The Phillies lead the season series 5-1 over Washington and five of the seven games went over the total.
The Skid Continues
The Nationals are one of the worst teams in baseball and they are in the midst of a six-game losing streak. Washington is 3-7 in their last 10 and they have been outscored by 17 runs during this stretch. The Nationals are 15-23 on the road this season and they are 29-39 covering the run line as an underdog.
Josiah Gray will make the start for the Nationals tonight in Philly. Gray has a 4.22 ERA, a 4.99 FIP, and a 1.27 WHIP this season. Gray pitched against the Phillies at home on 6/18 and allowed no runs on just one hit over six innings of work. Interestingly, Gray has been much better on the road this season. Gray has a 2.01 ERA, a .97 WHIP, and a 3.83 FIP. The Phillies have owned the Nationals, but this is a good spot for Gray to follow up on his last start against the Phillies.
The Phightin’ Phils
The Phillies are 43-38 this year and they are in third place in the NL East. The Phillies are currently seven games behind the Mets for first place in the NL East. They are 6-4 in their last 10 games and they have outscored opponents by 25 runs during this stretch. As a favorite, the Phillies are 23-30 on the run line this season.
Aaron Nola will make the start for the Phillies tonight at home. Nola is 5-5 with a 3.13 ERA, a 0.92 WHIP, and a 2.94 FIP. On June 18, Nola faced the Nationals in Washington and allowed no runs and just four hits over eight innings of work. At home this season, Nola has a 4.25 ERA, a 3.90 FIP, and a .84 WHIP. His splits are slightly better on the road, but Nola has been one of the best pitchers in the MLB this year. The Nationals have a .716 team OPS on the road this season and a .705 OPS against righties.
Phillies vs Nationals Prediction
I expect this game to go under eight runs. The last time these two pitchers squared off, the Phillies won in the 10th inning and the score was 2-1. Gray is better on the road and Nola is one of the best pitchers in the NL. Though these teams have now seen these pitchers before, I still think this game goes under.
PLAY: Under 8 Runs (-120)
