Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals Analysis
After getting swept in a double header last night, the Pirates and the Cardinals are set to square off for the final game of the series on Wednesday night. St. Louis won the first three games easily and they are 8-1 against the Pirates this season.
Jack Flaherty will make his season debut for the Cardinals and Roansy Contreras will make the start for the Pirates. For the series finale, the Cardinals are -165 home favorites, the run line is 1.5, and the total is 8.5 runs.
Pittsburgh Pirates Betting Preview
The Pirates are streaking, but not in the way you want to be streaking. Pittsburgh has lost 9 of their last 10 games and they have dropped to 24-37 on the season.
The Pirates are still in third place in the NL Central, but the Cubs and Reds are both within 1.5 games of taking over the Pirates spot. Pittsburgh is 11-20 on the road this season and they are 23-27 covering the run line as an underdog.
Roansy Contreras will make the start for the Pirates tonight in St. Louis. The 22-year-old has made four starts this season and seven total appearances.
Contreras has a 2.57 ERA, a 3.25 FIP, and a 1.18 WHIP this season. In his last three starts, Contreras has gone 15.1 innings allowing seven runs on 17 hits with 18 strikeouts.
On 4/9 he faced the Cardinals for 1.2 innings of work and he allowed two runs on two hits with two walks.
St. Louis Cardinals Betting Preview
The Cardinals have taken over first place in the NL Central from the Brewers and they are looking to maintain that lead for the rest of the season.
St. Louis is 6-4 in their last 10 games and they are now 37-27 on the season. St. Louis is 21-12 at home and they are 19-16 covering the run line as a favorite this season.
Jack Flaherty will make his season debut for the Cardinals. Flaherty, just 26 years old, was viewed as the Cardinals’ ace and he is looking to prove that he still is.
He has dealt with a shoulder injury all off-season and he started this year on the 60-game IL. In his two rehab starts, Flaherty went seven innings allowing just one hit and run and that came off a home run. I do not expect Flaherty to throw more than five innings tonight.
Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals Prediction
Tonight’s game features two question marks on the mound. Flaherty has been injured and Contreras is just 22 years old with seven appearances under his belt.
However, both of these pitchers have been impressive in their time in the big leagues. I am leaning toward the under for this matchup. For my 4% play of the day, check out my handicapper profile on Sportsmemo.
Prediction: Under 8.5
