Pittsburgh Pirates vs Washington Nationals Analysis
Yesterday, in the first game of this four-game series between the Nationals and the Pirates, Pittsburgh won 9-4. The Pirates are looking to extend their win streak to three games by beating the Nationals tonight.
For this matchup between these two teams, both sides are -110, the Nationals are +1.5, and the total is set at 9.
Pirates Get on Base, Can’t Score
Early in the season, the Pirates are doing a great job getting on base, but they are not producing runs. The Pirates bat .282 as a team with 58 hits, but they have only produced 27 runs. Pittsburgh has also gone deep just five times as an offense so far this season.
Pittsburgh has righty Mitch Keller taking the bump for tonight’s game vs Washington. Keller, a 26-year-old with 40 career starts, had a rough season debut. Keller let up four runs on six hits and two walks in just four innings in a loss to the Cardinals.
Nationals Not Relying on Starting Pitching
The Nationals have one of the weakest starting rotations in baseball, and it has been evident so far this season. Yesterday, vs Pittsburgh, starter Joan Adon was shelled for six runs on nine hits and four walks. Today, the Nationals hope they can get some sort of production from their starter.
On the hill for Washington is 29-year-old righty Erick Fedde. Fedde made his first start this season vs the Mets and allowed just two runs on five hits in five innings. He is tasked with shutting the Pirates offense down that scored nine runs in yesterday’s matchup, and in order to keep the Pirates down, Fedde needs to be sharp.
Pittsburgh Pirates vs Washington Nationals Prediction
With two teams so evenly matched, and two starters without track records of being winners, it’s tough to handicap this game. On one hand, I can see these teams producing a lot of runs with these two pitchers on the hill, but on the other hand, I can see Fedde throwing well and Keller bouncing back.
For this matchup, I like the Nationals to win outright on the road, and I would recommend the Nationals moneyline. Both teams have young rosters and they let their younger players shine, so it should be an interesting game. I think Juan Soto and the Nationals get the best of the Pirates.
Prediction: Washington Nationals Moneyline (-105)
