Rockies vs Giants Analysis
The Colorado Rockies host the San Francisco Giants in the first of a four game set. The Rox took two of three from the Cubs on the north side of Chicago, while San Fran dropped three straight to the Dodgers in Oracle Park. Jakob Junis and Chad Kuhl are your starters, first pitch at Coors Field is scheduled for 8:40 PM EDT / 5:40 PM PDT.
The Giants are 69-77 and Colorado is 64-82 and neither team is in playoff contention. The Rockies have played well lately, winning seven of their last 10 games; while the Giants are just 4-6 in the same time frame.
Giant Hitting Issue
This was a year of negative regression for the Giants, as last year’s 107-win season just wasn’t sustainable. An aging lineup, too many key injuries and a mediocre pitching staff are the reasons San Francisco won’t make the postseason in 2022.
Starter Jakob Junis has had a decent, but unspectacular season plagued by injuries. In 20 games, 16 starts and 97.2 innings, he’s posted a 4-6 record with 4.15 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. The right-hander had two shutout starts in April, and a 3.67 ERA in five May outings.
After missing a lot of time on the IL in June and July, he hasn’t been able to pick up where he left off in the spring. For the month of August, he has five starts and 24.0 innings with a 7.13 ERA and 1.42 WHIP.
The Giants’ hitting has also been an issue in 2022, with the 19th best OPS and 24th highest team batting average, with the 4th highest strikeout rate in MLB. They’ll have to improve in these areas (along with better relief pitching) if they want a realistic shot at the postseason in 2023.
Rockies Back From Windy City
The Rockies signed Chad Kuhl as a free agent from the Pirates in hopes that he could be a good fourth or fifth starter for the club. Unfortunately, it hasn’t worked out that well in 2022.
The sixth-year veteran has decent strikeout numbers (97 in 123.1 innings), but he doesn’t have overpowering stuff and is more of a pitch-to-contact type of pitcher. This type of hurler doesn’t do well in Coors Field – just ask Miles Mikolas and Zac Davies.
In 24 starts he has a 5.33 ERA, a Rocky Mountain high 1.50 WHIP and a 5-9 record. Kuhl’s numbers this season have gone from bad to worse. With a 6.45 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in his last 15 outings, plus an 8.90 ERA and 1.79 WHIP in his last seven starts. He’s given up at least one home run in each of his last 10 games (Prop Betting Alert for big flies hit against Mr. Kuhl).
Rockies vs Giants Prediction
Both starters are in terrible current form and Chad Kuhl has given up runs to opposing lineups in his last few Coors Field starts Chicago-style: That is, early and often.
The Rockies right-hander has also faced the Giants twice in May, giving five runs in each start and going just 3.0 and 4.2 innings. That’s why I like the visitors to score at least three runs in the first five innings Monday night.
Prediction: Giants 1st 5 Innings Over 2.5 Team Total Runs Scored
