St. Louis Cardinals vs Chicago Cubs Analysis
On Tuesday night, the Cubs and Cardinals face off for the first game of a three-game series. The Cubs are coming off a series loss against the Giants on the road, and the Cardinals are coming off a series win against the Nationals on the road.
The season series between the Cubs and Cardinals is tied four games a piece. For this matchup, the Cardinals are -170 home favorites, the run line is 1.5, and the total is set at eight runs.
Thompson Trying To Get It Done On Road
Chicago has brought itself back up to third place in the NL Central, but the playoffs are still a long shot. In their last 10 games, the Cubs are 7-3 with a 2.05 team ERA.
The Cubs are 41-60 on the season and they are 15.5 games behind the Brewers for first place. Chicago is 44-31 covering the run line as an underdog this season.
Keegan Thompson will make the start for the Cubs tonight on the road in St. Louis. Thompson is 8-4 on the season with a 3.16 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, and a 3.70 FIP. On 6/21, Thompson made a start at home against the Cardinals and allowed three runs on five hits in 5.1 innings of work.
On the road this year, Thompson has a 4.40 ERA, a .475 slugging percentage against, a 5.50 FIP, and a 1.34 WHIP. This is a huge drop off from his home numbers, so it may be a rough outing for Thompson tonight in St. Louis.
St. Louis Splits Focus Between Deadline and Cubs
The Cardinals are 3 games back in the NL Central, and it is possible they make a splash trade today for some more talent. St. Louis has been possibly linked to Juan Soto, and if they can pull off that deal, the Cardinals would have another superstar.
St. Louis is 54-48 on the year, they are 6-4 in their last 10 games, and they are 28-25 covering the run line as a favorite this season.
Veteran Adam Wainwright will take the mound for the Cardinals tonight at home. Wainwright is 7-8 with a 3.28 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, and a 3.81 FIP. On 6/5, Wainwright faces the Cubs at Wrigley and allowed two runs on nine hits over seven innings of work.
At home this season, Wainwright has a 2.01 ERA, a .224 batting average against, a 108 WHIP, and a 3.19 FIP. I expect the veteran to be on his A-game tonight at home against a Cubs team with a .689 OPS on the road.
St. Louis Cardinals vs Chicago Cubs Prediction
Keegan Thompson is not a great pitcher on the road, and Adam Wainwright is a great pitcher at home. These two teams are familiar with each other’s starting pitcher, but I think that benefits the Cardinals more than the Cubs. St. Louis needs to win more desperately, so I think they will pull off this win.
Prediction: St. Louis Cardinals -1.5 +125
