Yankees vs Pirates Analysis
The Pittsburgh Pirates meet with the New York Yankees for the second and final game of a quick two game interleague series from Yankee Stadium on Wednesday evening. The Yankees prevailed last night as they stormed back with five runs in the bottom of the 9th to sneak out a 9-8 victory.
The righty Luis Severino will return from the 60 day IL for New York while Pittsburgh counters with the youngster Roansy Contreras. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM EST/4:05.
Severino Returns to Yankees Rotation
Luis Severino returns to the New York Yankees starting rotation from the 60 day IL due to a lat strain. He hasn’t pitched since July 13th and had a 5-3 record and 3.45 ERA prior to that. Severino gave up two runs across 4.1 innings while striking out six in a Triple-A rehab start.
The Bronx Bombers have a stranglehold on the American League East with an 89-58 record on the season. They currently have a 5.5 game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays and a 7.5 game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays.
With only 15 games or so remaining in the season, it would take a complete collapse by the Yanks. In yesterday’s 9-8 come from behind victory Aaron Judge hit his 60th homerun in the bottom of the 9th to set the stage for Giancarlo Stanton to hit a walkoff grand slam. Nestor Cortes gave his team a chance early with five innings of one run baseball prior to the bullpen getting knocked around.
Contreras Makes First Start at Yankee Stadium
The Pittsburgh Pirates record dropped to 55-93 on the season after blowing a 8-4 ninth inning lead and ultimately losing 9-8 on a Giancarlo Stanton walkoff grand slam. Bryan Reynolds went 4 for 5 with two runs and two RBI while hitting his 24th home run of the season.
Luis Ortiz gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits across five innings of work. The Pirates fins themselves about where one would have expected as they have been in rebuild mode for the better part of a decade.
They are currently locked in last place in the National League Central and have a bottom five lineup across the board. The 22 year-old Roansy Contreras gets the nod for Pittsburgh on Wednesday night.
He is 5-4 with a 3.24 ERA and 1.27 WHIP on the season. Contreras held the Cincinnati Reds to one run on three hits across four innings of work.
Yankees vs Pirates Prediction
The Bronx Bombers enter this contest as tremendous -280 favorites on the money line while the visitors the Pittsburgh Pirates sit at +235 with a total of 8. The New York Yankees hit a rough patch in August after starting the season on fire.
They have bounced back in September with a 10-6 record, including going 9-2 in their last 11 games at Yankee Stadium. The Bronx Bombers are back in action with an average of 6.31 runs across their last 13 games.
The Pittsburgh Pirates haven’t enjoyed the same success as they have lost 5 of their last 6 games while going 6-13 in their last 19 road games. The starting pitching should be about a wash but the Yankees should once again feast on this poor Pittsburgh pen.
We going with the Yankees on the run line at -130 odds in this one. I would also sprinkle something on an Aaron Judge home run as his next long ball gives him 61 to tie him with Roger Maris for Yankees all-time record. You can get +215 odds on FD.
Prediction #1: New York Yankees -1.5 -130
Prediction #2: Sprinkle Aaron Judge Home Run +215
