Atlanta Hawks vs Portland Trailblazers Preview
Portland’s season has been riddled with injuries while also trading away star guard C.J. McCollum to the Pelicans for some role players and draft picks.
One of those players is Josh Hart who went off against Washington on Saturday posting 44 points on 15-21 shooting and also adding eight rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Power forward Trendon Watford put up 27 points on 11-16 shooting in that 127-118 win as well. Atlanta has won two straight which includes a 121-118 win against Indiana last night. In that win, Trae Young scored 47 points on 13-20 shooting including 7-10 from three.
The Hawks and Blazers will battle it out in their only meeting in Atlanta this season.
Trailblazers Rocked With Injuries
The Trailblazers needed that win against Washington to stop a six game losing streak. During that skid, they happened to fall all the way out of playoff contention with New Orleans leapfrogging them for the 10th seed.
For what it’s worth the Trailblazers aren’t too concerned with making the playoffs at this point considering the series of events that have transpired so far this year including star player Damian Lillard getting injured on December 31 and not playing since.
Portland ranks 26th in points per game given up and 24th in three pointers attempted against. Something Young will look to take advantage of tonight. The Trailblazers also rank dead last in three point field goal percentage against as well.
This line up looks completely different than the one rolled out on opening night and Portland for the most part is counting the days until this season comes to a close.
Young Playing Big For Atlanta
Atlanta doesn’t play much better defense themselves ranking in the bottom ten in points per game given up on the season as well as field goal percentage against.
Young is the team’s leading scorer at 28.1 points per game which is tied for 4th in the NBA only behind Giannis Antetokounmpo, Joel Embiid and LeBron James.
Young’s 9.4 assists per game is 3rd overall as well. After him though, scoring mostly comes from forwards John Collins and Bogdan Bogdanovic.
The Hawks currently sit in the 9th spot in the Eastern Conference but would like to get into the top six to avoid the playoff play-in tournament now held for the 7-10 seeds.
They’ll need to play like they’re in the playoffs this last month of the season and what better way to start that push than by playing a lowly Portland team.
Atlanta Hawks vs Portland Trailblazers Prediction
With the spread currently favoring Atlanta by 14 points and the total being at 230.5, I’m going to roll with the over hitting here based on how dismal both defenses have been this season.
The 14 points is a little too much for me to want to play, but I can still see a double digit win here for the Hawks. A 125-115 Hawks win seems within the realm of possibility so a play on the over makes sense.
Prediction: Over 230.5
