San Antonio Spurs vs Minnesota Timberwolves Preview
Analysts around the NBA are still trying to figure out how good Minnesota is. Are they the team that dropped a game to Orlando to one of the NBA’s worst teams three days ago or are they the team that came back and beat the Heat in Miami?
At halftime of that game in Miami, the Timberwolves were down 12 at the half, but were able to mount a comeback near the end of the third, eventually coming away with the win 113-104. I
f there’s such a thing as balanced scoring the Timberwolves had that on display against Miami as eight players scored between 11-16 points.
Jaylen Nowell was the team’s leading scorer off the bench with 16 and both Karl Anthony-Towns and backup center Naz Reid each accounted for 10 rebounds.
The Spurs will have their hands full at home trying to win for the first time since head coach Gregg Poppovich became the NBA’s all-time regular season wins leader.
Spurs Building Young Core
The Spurs have only won two of their past eight games showcasing a very young core including Dejonte Murray, Lonnie Walker IV and Keldon Johnson.
Murray was held out of their last game against Indiana along with Johnson and center Jakob Poeltl. All of them should be back in for their game against Minnesota tonight.
San Antonio as a team is top 10 in points per game and field goal percentage on offense. Defense is another story though as they’re in the bottom ten in points per game against and field goal percentage against.
They could be in for a long night as the Timberwolves are tied for first in points per game scored this season.
Is Minnesota For Real?
If you want to talk about offensive powerhouses, you have to bring up the Timberwolves. During a recent six game winning streak the least amount of points they scored in a game was 124.
They’re 8-2 in their last ten games and are trying to move past the 7-10 play-in tournament for the seven and eight seeds.
They are 1.5 games back of Denver for that 6th seed and will be playing with increased intensity as we head down the last month of the regular season.
Karl Anthony-Towns leads the team in scoring at 24.9 points per game as well as rebounds at 9.8 per game.
He along with Anthony Edwards and D’Angelo Russell are like a tripod of youth and talent where if one of them were to go down with an injury, the season pretty much goes up in smoke for the Timberwolves.
San Antonio Spurs vs Minnesota Timberwolves Prediction
The Timberwolves are rolling and with a four point spread against the Spurs who essentially have nothing to play for, I have no problem with them covering that spread.
The over/under of 240 seems a little steep for me especially if this one happens to turn into a blow out of some sort.
Minnesota does have a number of players listed as day-to-day so be sure to do a final check of the injury report before placing your bets, but if the core players are good to go, take Minnesota confidently.
Prediction: Minnesota Timberwolves -4
