We’ve seen two extremely tight one possession games in the first two meetings between these two schools this year; yet I’m comfortable laying two buckets with the Cougars in the third meeting tonight.  Here’s why.

BYU is coming to play – I’m expecting their ‘A’ game here.  Leading scorer and rebounder Yoenis Childs: “It’s win or go home. We’ve prepared ourselves every day for this. We’ve taken every game seriously, like it’s the most important game of the year.  That mindset is going to help us going into this because you can’t just flip a switch, no matter how talented you are. We’ve prepared for this moment all year. We’re just focused on winning. This conference is competitive. It’s been a long time since BYU has won a conference tournament. So we want to go do something special.”

BYU got thoroughly embarrassed on this floor in their WCC Tourney opener last year, trailing by as many as 44 points in the second half of an ugly loss to San Diego.  More Childs: “It was totally frustrating. It seems like everything fell apart.  Everything that could have gone wrong did. We allowed San Diego to start firing on all cylinders. You have to give them credit. They played a great game. But we’re all very optimistic guys. We all believe. If we’re talking about the law of averages here, we’re due for a big game.”

BYU has only played once in the last two weeks, an impressive road blowout at Pepperdine to extend their winning streak to nine games.  Assistant coach Kody Fueger, talking about BYU’s prep despite no practice on Sunday: “We had a great practice (Saturday). The guys are hungry. They’re ready to face somebody else and they’re ready to play a game.”

More Fueger: “We’ve had a couple of Saint Mary’s things in all of our practices that we’ve done throughout the week so our guys will be ready to go. They’ll watch a ton of film. We’ll take (Sunday) off and have a little shoot-around Monday….Our guys have gone through this situation and know the feel of it (from the Maui Invitational in preseason play, when they didn’t practice on Sunday, then blew out UCLA to win the tourney on Monday). Our guys are really familiar with Saint Mary’s and they know exactly what they do. They’ve been talking about it all week long. They’ve been hoping for Saint Mary’s and they’ll be ready to go.”  Facing a St Mary’s team that has been a moneyburner, failing to cover in every role except as a double digit favorite for the last month, look for BYU to survive and advance.  Take BYU.
