Dinelson Lamet is one of those pitchers that got a lot of buzz this offseason as a candidate to take the next step in his career. Opposing batters hit just .105 against his curveball last year, getting swings and misses on 48.3%. His slider was even nastier with a 51.3% whiff rate. The problems came with his four seam fastball which he worked on during this offseason. Only one Arizona hitter has seen him five times or more and Ketel Marte went 0-5 with three strikeouts. I'm not a huge fan of Arizona's lineup right now.
On the other side you've got Robbie Ray who dropped weight and shortened his arm action this offseason. He's been fantastic during the summer with 17 strikeouts in 11 innings of work. The southpaw threw 97 pitches in his final tune-up and is playing for a contract right now. Ray did have some struggles with the Padres last year, but a lot of that could be attributed to the 12 walks putting runners on base. San Diego hitters are hitting .173 (23-102) against him with Austin Hedges, Eric Hosmer and Wil Myers combining to be 11-63 with 26 strikeouts. I can see a slow start here as well.
** Action only with Lamet and Ray **
