    3%  Take Louisiana – Lafayette (#415)

The Rajin’ Cajuns won 11 games last year.  One of their three losses was a season opening ‘much closer than expected’ step up in class at Mississippi State; a one score game with less than two minutes to play.  It’s worth noting that Louisiana- Lafayette trailed by three TD’s at one point in the second half, but kept fighting.

This year’s Rajin Cajun squad might well be better than last year’s 11 win team.  Senior QB Levi Lewis returns off a 3000 passing yard, 26-4 TD/INT ratio season in 2019.  He’s one of FIVE Louisiana offensive players on the Sun Belt preseason first or second team, to go along with four defensive players.  Head coach Billy Napier has his teams confidence level through the roof right now; a team talking about being the top ‘Group of Five’ conference teams and playing in a BCS Bowl.  Running back Chris Smith: “We’re gonna give them boys a good game. We’re gonna come out with a win.”

Coach Napier, talking about the recent COVID outbreak in Ames: “I think at one point, Louisiana was one of the worst (hot spots) in the country.  So this will be just another day at the office for us.  We’re going there to play football. We’ll fly in there, we’ll spend time in our hotel, we’ll travel to the game, it’s an early kickoff. I mean, it’s business as usual for us, and our guys are going to take the necessary precautions.”

I’m not convinced that Iowa State is taking Louisiana as seriously as they should be; a concern for head coach Matt Campbell.  This was a late-add, stand alone game for the Cyclones.  They get a bye next week, then face TCU to open Big 12 play, and I couldn’t find many quotes about their focus on the opponent at hand THIS WEEK.   Yes, senior QB Brock Purdy is back, but Iowa State lost 144 career starts off their offensive line due to offseason departures, a VERY suspect unit.

The Cyclones have struggled out of gate repeatedly under Campbell, including a triple OT win vs Northern Iowa last year as a 23 point favorites and a three point showing on offense in their season opener the previous year at Iowa.  Expect a battle, not a blowout.  Take Louisiana- Lafayette.
