I understand that Max Scherzer is a true ace and a perennial Cy Young Award candidate.  I also understand that the Nationals haven’t been winning for Scherzer all year, just 3-10 in his 13 starts.  248 pitchers have started a game in MLB this season.  Scherzer ranks #248 – dead last -- in terms of profitability for his backers, even after his 15 strikeout performance last week.  It’s surely worth noting that was Scherzer’s season high pitch count in that ballgame, throwing 120 pitches before getting pulled.

The Nats momentum has been snapped off back-2-back losses, blowing a four run lead on Thursday, then losing in walk-off fashion last night.  Closer Sean Doolittle blew the save last night, leaving his availability tonight very much in question.   They lost earlier in the season against these Padres with Scherzer on the hill, thanks to yet another bullpen meltdown from a team that can’t seem to get outs in the latter stages of tight games.

Meanwhile, the Padres have won each of Eric Lauer’s last four starts.  In his last four at home, he’s allowed five earned runs in 23.2 innings of work; a young hurler with a sharp home/road dichotomy.   The Nats are 6-10 against opposing southpaws this year, primed to lose one more time in Southern California tonight.  Take the Padres
