The A’s have been exceptionally good at bouncing back off a road loss on the road; 10-2 in their last dozen tries in this role dating back to early June as part of a 24-13 road record overall.  Coming off a 3-2 loss in Chicago yesterday, this is a clear bounceback spot for a team that has been very good at bouncing back in hostile environments.

Early in the season, Lucas Giolito was one of the surprise stories of the season.  Last year, Giolito had the highest ERA among qualified pitchers in MLB.  This year, he was an All Star; truly dominant through May and June.  That was then, this is now.  The ChiSox are just 3-6 in his last nine starts.  Giolito has notched only one win since the beginning of July.  He’s coming off his highest pitch count game in two months; unable to shut down the light hitting Tigers last time out.  I’m not expecting a Giolito gem this afternoon and Chicago used their key bullpen arms last night.  Closer Alex Colome threw 31 pitches in the ninth; not available today.

Oakland, on the other hand, did not use their key bullpen arms in a game they were trailing yesterday; leaving their strong bullpen in good shape here.  Oakland’s lineup is clicking: 43 runs scored in their last eight ballgames, pounding out five runs or more five times during that span.  And starter Chris Bassitt has gone six full innings in four of his last five starts, allowing a grand total of nine runs during that entire span.  Short chalk worth laying!  Take the A’s.
