Louisiana Tech vs Charlotte Analysis
Louisiana Tech faces off against Charlotte in a cross-divisional matchup in the Conference USA. Both teams sit in third in their respective divisions with the Bulldogs chasing North Texas and the 49ers chasing Florida Atlantic.
Louisiana Tech actually just dropped two games to North Texas and Florida Atlantic before bouncing back with a 86-82 win at Florida International. A conference championship isn’t out of the consideration for each as they both sit within two games back of the top of their respective Conference USA divisions.
The Bulldogs sit as 3.5 favorites heading into Charlotte but where can the 49ers take advantage of them to pull off the upset?
Defense Optional for 49ers
If the 49ers are going to pull off this upset it’s definitely not going to be on defense. Allowing 71 points per game, Charlotte ranks 270th nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency.
They also rank 264th or worse in other key defensive statistics including opponent two point, three point and effective field goal percentage.
Junior Jahmir Young is one of the top of the conference’s top players averaging over 35 minutes, 18 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists per game while shooting over 46 percent from the field and 85 percent at the free throw line.
Freshman center Aly Khalifa could be the X-Factor in this game as the team’s second best assist producer. He’s actually posted a combined 18 assists over the team’s past two games and a big reason why three point shooters on the team are able to get open as the 49ers rank 41st nationally in three point shooting percentage.
Fearsome Freshman for Bulldogs
The Bulldogs will bring in one of the most inexperienced teams in the country as their 14 man roster is composed of eight freshman, three sophomores, one junior and two seniors.
Although inexperienced, Louisiana Tech is great at taking care of the ball ranking 33rd nationally in unforced turnovers and 47th in turnover rate overall. They’ve done what they can since losing Isaiah Crawford for the season back in November to a knee injury.
Picking up his slack has been star Kenneth Lofton Jr. who averages a double double (17.3 pts, 11 reb) each game on the season. They play at a somewhat fast pace while getting up effective and efficient shots.
They’re 63rd nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency and 61st in effective field goal percentage. Senior leader Amorie Archibald will play a role in this one as well as the team’s top three point shooter. He tied Lofton Jr. as the teams leading scorer with 21 in their last game out against Florida International.
Louisiana Tech vs Charlotte Prediction
Louisiana Tech has more to play for here and can’t afford a loss as they don’t have many quality wins to help propel them into the NCAA Tournament come season end.
I expect Lofton Jr. and Archibald to play their game generating effective shots for the Bulldogs. They’re only 2-3 in their last five and need to get it going down the stretch to be serious contenders in the Conference USA.
Prediction: Louisiana Tech -3.5
