Coastal Carolina vs Charleston College Basketball Analysis
South Dakota State went 21-0 in the Summit League last season, yet the Jackrabbits find themselves as 9.5-point underdogs in Tulsa tonight.
Oral Roberts was the last Summit League team to beat South Dakota State in the 2021 conference tournament, in a run that propelled the Golden Eagles to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
Charleston Charges Into Conway
Charleston comes into this game with an impressive 11-1 record, including multiple wins over top-100 teams like Richmond, Colorado State, Virginia Tech and Kent State. The Cougars’ only loss of the season came against North Carolina, in just their second game of the season.
The Cougars and UNC Wilmington figure to battle at the top of the CAA standings this season. Coastal just played Wilmington three weeks ago, and the Seahawks held the Chants to 58 points on 36-percent shooting from the field.
Charleston’s defensive metrics line up well with Wilmington’s, so the Chanticleers might be in for another tough night against one of the CAA’s best.
Wofford transfer Ryan Larson has been the catalyst to Charleston’s offense this season. He’s scored in double figures in eight of the last nine games, while leading his team in minutes, assists, steals and three-point shooting.
Coastal Porous Behind 3pt Line
Coastal Carolina enters this contest at 6-4, but the Chants have not played a very impressive schedule. Three of their wins have come against non-Division 1 teams, and the other three have come against teams ranked outside of KenPom’s top-200 (Winthrop and South Dakota twice).
The season is still young so the sample size is limited, but Coastal Carolina has one of the most unique shooting splits that you’ll see.
The Chanticleers are one of the worst three-point shooting teams in the country, connecting on just 25.9-percent of their attempts. Yet, they are the best free throw shooting team in the nation, hitting over 84-percent from the foul line.
