San Francisco vs New Mexico Analysis
We’re in store for a non-conference battle out west tonight as the 9-0 New Mexico Lobos head to San Francisco to take on the 8-2 Dons tonight at 11:30pm ET in Las Vegas.
The Lobos have been flawless this season but much of that is because of their light non-conference schedule. Although they did knock off their toughest opponent Saint Mary’s 69-65 as 9.5-point underdogs.
San Francisco is only 3-6 against the spread this season as they failed to cover in their most previous matchup, a 69-51 win against Merrimack as 20.5-point underdogs. Can the Dons cover as 4.5-point underdogs tonight or perhaps win straight up? Let’s see!
San Francisco Not Shy Shooting From Deep
Overall this game should be fast-paced and the Dons are all for it. They rank 35th in adjusted tempo and 122nd in quickest average possession length. Although they like to launch it from deep they struggle to make the attempts they should ranking only 206th in 3pt field goal percentage nationally.
Senior guard Khalil Shabazz has been the team’s pulse so far this season averaging 14 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4 assists per game while also adding 2.4 steals per game as well. He’s also great at the free throw line making 32-36 attempts so far this season.
If the Dons want a shot at winning outright, he’ll need to be more efficient from the 3pt line only shooting 32% from downtown on the season.
For more balance on offense the team may look more to 7’2 junior center Volodymyr Markovetskyy who had a breakout game against Merrimack scoring 19 points on 6-6 shooting and adding 7 rebounds.
Lobos Go For 10-0 Record
The Lobos are the complete opposite of the Dons as far as 3pt field goal attempts go. They’re 361st in 3pt attempts per game and only 18.8% of their total offense comes from behind the 3pt line which is 360th in the country even though the team ranks 123rd nationally in 3pt field goal percentage, not bad.
Their top 50 nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency led by senior transfer forward Morris Udeze putting up 19 points, 6 rebounds all while shooting 64% from the field.
Guard tandem Jamal Mashburn Jr. and Jaelen House both average over 16 points per game and each shoot over 40% from 3pt range, but as stated those attempts are minimal at times.
In their last game against UTSA, the these two combined to score 39 points and went 5-8 from 3pt range. On defense the Lobos rank in the top 100 in many key analytics including 2pt field goal percentage against, block percentage, turnover percentage against the opposition as well as offensive rebound rate allowed.
San Francisco vs New Mexico Prediction
The total is listed at 156.5 for this one and although it’s high, it’s for a reason, both teams play up-tempo and both for the most part are efficient on offense. New Mexico is expected to make some noise in the Mountain West this season and I feel there’s some extra incentive to play hard and keep their undefeated season going.
Prediction: Over 156.5 / New Mexico Lobos -4.5
