Fresno State vs San Francisco Analysis
Fresno State is coming off a season in which they won The Basketball Classic Championship led by star Orlando Robinson who is currently with the Heat in the NBA.
He was the guy for the Bulldogs last season averaging 19 points, eight rebounds, three assists all while shooting 48% from the field. He also added a block and steal per game last season.
Those are huge shoes to fill for the Bulldogs who are struggling out of the gates losing to UC Santa Barbara in their first game against D-I competition this season.
Even in their lone win against Fresno Pacific, the Bulldogs only won by 13. They take on San Francisco tonight at home in what will be the Dons first road game of the season.
Dons Getting It Done
The Dons made the NCAA Tournament last season losing to #7 seed Murray State in the first round. They made it to the WCC semi-finals losing to Gonzaga by 10. They finished 24-10 and are looking for another 20-win season this time around.
They head into their matchup with Fresno State as slight favorites while led by senior guard Khalil Shabazz averaging 15.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3 assists and almost 3 steals per game so far this season. The Dons are 0-2 against the spread this season but only failing to cover by a few points each time.
This team likes to play up-tempo ranking 22nd this season in adjusted tempo and 67th in average possession length. They have a pair of 7’0 monsters to alternate down low in Saba Gigiberia and Volodymyr Markovetskyy to keep the Bulldogs from driving the lane and getting buckets near the rim all together.
Bulldog’s New Identity Without Robinson
So where is the production going to come from Fresno State with Robinson now in the NBA? Senior Isaih Moore is now playing for his 4th different college team after spending one season each with Charleston, St. Johns and Southern Miss.
He’s averaged 12.5 points on 58% shooting so far but it has to be a tough transition for a player in such a unique situation. Anthony Holland and Donavan Yap are Bulldogs with much more experience with the team and have expectedly improved their ppg from last season with Robinson now gone.
The Bulldogs will look to limit possessions from the Dons with their very slow play as they rank 75th nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency and 349th in adjusted tempo.
Fresno State vs San Francisco Prediction
I think Fresno State has many more adjustments to make over San Francisco and the Dons will have the advantage underneath the rim with the Bulldogs ranking 360th in offensive rebounding percentage and 330th in turnover percentage.
If the Dons choose to press, they have a higher chance of creating turnovers thus increasing possessions for themselves. Take the Dons for their first ATS win of the season as the more well-rounded team at this point early in the season.
Prediction: San Francisco Dons PK
