Hawaii vs UC San Diego Betting Analysis
Hawaii should be happy to be home after a two game stint in California winning at Cal Poly and losing to UC Davis.
They’ve alternated wins and losses their previous seven games are are double digit favorites welcoming in UC San Diego to Honolulu who have lost four of their past five games and have three straight against the spread losses.
Hawaii heads in 11-12 against the spread failing to cover in four of their past five but their previous four matchups have gone over the total. What can we expect in this Hawaii vs UC San Diego Big West clash? Let’s dive in.
Hawaii Hanging On With Stout Defense
The Rainbow Warriors are fueled by their defense allowing only 62 ppg which is 19th nationally. In conference play they’re first in 3pt field goal percentage and effective field goal percentage allowed.
They’re 3rd in adjusted defensive efficiency and 4th in 2pt field goal percentage allowed. Senior forward Kamaka Hepa has started to heat up for Hawaii as he averages 11.7 ppg on the season.
However over his past four games he’s been averaging 17 ppg including 29 in their win at Cal Poly their last game.
Noel Coleman has seemingly taken a backseat on offense lately averaging 13 ppg on the season yet he’s failed to hit that marker in five straight games.
He should be able to pick things back up tonight as UC San Diego sports a not so impressive defense this season. The last time UC San Diego went against a solid Big West defense was a week ago at UC Irvine where they were waxed 76-60.
Expect Hawaii to get down low and force the Tritons to play solid interior defense or foul where Hawaii has been exceptional from the free throw line ranking 2nd in Big West play in free throw shooting percentage.
Pope Pushing Tritons
Big West play has been the downfall for UC San Diego going only 3-9 in league play this season. Out of 11 Big West teams they’re 10th in adjusted defensive efficiency, 9th in effective field goal percentage as well as 2pt field goal percentage allowed.
They lack interior presence ranking dead last in Big West play in offensive rebounding percentage and block percentage. The Tritons are also second to last in limiting offensive rebounds on defense.
Junior Bryce Pope heads this Tritons team averaging 18.6 ppg while adding 4 rpg as well. He struggled in their overtime loss against Cal State Bakersfield going 6-19 from the field including 0-8 from 3pt range.
When these two teams met in early January Hawaii came away with a 62-49 win limiting Pope to 16 points and 0-3 shooting from 3pt range.
Hawaii vs UC San Diego Expert Prediction
Hawaii has played in four straight over games and it’s time for some regression there. These two are 6th and 7th in adjusted tempo so no fast play will be anticipated.
I don’t trust Hawaii to cover as double digit favorites and there’s no way you can trust UC San Diego’s offense so the way I’m looking here is under 130.5 points scored with Hawaii winning 65-60.
Prediction: Under 130.5 Points Scored
