New Mexico State vs Stephen F. Austin Analysis
New Mexico State had the WAC regular season championship in-hand until a brutal upset in their last game to Chicago State 61-59 in which they were 17 point favorites.
Now the WAC is up for grabs as Stephen F. Austin heads into Las Cruces to take on the Aggies one game back of them in the standings.
The Lumberjacks have been on fire as of late winning eight straight as before that they had lost two straight with one of those coming to New Mexico State 72-58 in Nacogdoches, TX.
The Aggies welcome the Lumberjacks as six point favorites, but let’s see if they can do enough to cover that tonight!
Aggies Deflated by Injuries
So, what happened to the Aggies against one of the worst teams in the conference Chicago State? Their offense was abysmal, only shooting 36% from the field but injuries, illnesses and other off court issues seemed to have caught up with them.
Five of the Aggies 11 rotational players didn’t suit up against the Cougars and with a team that ranks in the top half of teams in the country in bench minutes, this could be a problem moving forward.
Therefore, junior guard tandem Teddy Allen and Jabari Rice will need to carry this team if they want to beat the Lumberjacks.
They average over 32 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists per game. If there are limited players once again, they may need to put up 40-45 in order to win this game against Stephen F. Austin.
Be sure to monitor the Aggies injury report prior to game time to get a better indication of how the team will perform tonight.
Lumberjacks Sawing Down Opponents Inside
The Lumberjacks current winning streak definitely isn’t due to them taking care of the ball as nationally they rank 348th in percentage of possessions that result in turnovers.
This might not be a problem though as New Mexico State struggles to produce turnovers on the defensive end. They generate points on the offensive end inside as they rank 74th in two point field goal percentage.
Over 57% of their points come from two point range which is 30th nationally. On defense the Lumberjacks have been thriving ranking 70th overall in adjusted defensive efficiency and 8th in forcing opponent turnovers.
The offensive force inside is led by senior forward Gavin Kensmil who averages over 16 points and 6 rebounds per game while shooting almost 60% from the field.
His field goal percentage is top 50 in the country for qualified players.
New Mexico State vs Stephen F. Austin Prediction
As it stands with the off-court concerns for the Aggies I think it’s safe to go with the Lumberjacks plus the points.
They’ve been on fire and when you add in the revenge aspect plus the chance of leapfrogging New Mexico State in the WAC standings, Stephen F. Austin should be locked and loaded to work the paint with Kensmil once again.
This game will be close which will be good getting six points with Stephen F. Austin.
Prediction: Stephen F. Austin +6
