Alabama vs Texas A&M Analysis
The SEC is looking like one of the best conferences this season in top to bottom play, along side the B10 this year, and no… we aren’t talking about football.
The top 9 teams in the SEC are at least .500 in conference play, with Texas A&M falling just outside those numbers with a 7-9 record in conference play.
Alabama has found themselves in a position as one of the top teams in the nation at points, dominating their home schedule, but also struggling immensely against the spread.
These teams have yet to meet yet this season, but dating back to 1997 the series has been close, both teams are 8-8 against the spread, but A&M holds the slight advantage with a 9-7 straight up record when taking on the Crimson Tide.
Aggies Aggressive on Defense
Texas A&M has turned things around in the recent games, they lost eight straight games prior to a 3-1 record straight up & against the spread in the last four games overall. Even after a 3-9 run, they are still not far behind Alabama with a 18-11 record.
The Aggies come in ranked 66th overall through KenPom, possessing an offense that holds the 82nd spot in terms of efficiency and a defense that ranks 62nd. They have struggled from beyond the arc, ranking #257 in the country in 3PT%, all-in-all leading to the 211th best effective FG%.
Their main strength without question has been their uncanny ability to force turnovers, ranking #2 in the nation in steal percentage and #7 in the country in forced turnover percentage.
Yet, that defense has helped post just a 2-4 record against offensive units that rank in the top-50 and the offense has put up just 66.1 PPG against defensive units that rank in the top-100, resulting in a 4-10 record in those 14 games!
They have struggled against the top competition on their schedule, winning just 3 of the 13 games they have played against top-100 teams overall, pulling out wins against Notre Dame (#48), Arkansas (#19) and Florida (#51)!
Crimson Tide Not Covering
Alabama has posted a 19-10 record so far this season, which is a step up when you look at the fact that they have covered just four of their last 21 games and are just barely over the .500 mark against conference opponents.
Their saving grace this season has been playing on their home court, putting up nearly 80 PPG and holding the opposition to just over 71 PPG on just 40.1% shooting.
Their saving grace this season has been the play of their offensive unit, which ranks #10 in the country in efficiency, they are a top-10 team in terms of offensive rebounding and they are 14th in 2PT%, yet surprisingly enough, this offensive unit may be even better if they truly played to their strength.
They are one of the best teams in shooting percentage inside the arc, but only 46.4% of their points are coming from inside the arc, ranking 289th in distribution from inside the arc.
Their defense has been middle of the pack defending against the shot, ranking 130th against the deep ball and 145th defending against shots inside the arc.
The play of Alabama is even a little more impressive when you think about the fact that they have played the hardest schedule in the nation.
While they have lost three of the last eight games, all three of those losses have came against top-10 teams overall and only three of their losses this entire season have come against teams outside the top-50, with A&M being one of their “easier” games in recent weeks.
Alabama vs Texas A&M Prediction
Alabama is set to take the court for their senior night, in the last home game this season for the Crimson Tide. They look to improve their 13-2 record at home, on a court that sits in the top-60 in terms of home court advantage, absolutely dominating at home and using that as a big advantage.
Regardless of what has happened in recent games, Alabama still finds themselves ranked 25th in the country and just barely holding a position in the top of the AP poll, 5th in the conference rankings and 5th in national rankings, in terms of SEC opponents.
Alabama is looking to solidify their spot as one of the top teams in the SEC, but A&M isn’t quite out of it and they will need to find their defensive stride to stop this offensive unit of Alabama.
Texas A&M is 10-3 OU on the road this season and have gone over the total in 11 of their 16 conference games. Alabama has also posted an 18-10 OU record on the year and have gone over the total in 10 of their 16 conference games.
Prediction: Over 152.5
