Alabama vs Ole Miss Analysis
On paper, this SEC match-up may not look quite as exciting as it actually is, as Alabama heads to Mississippi to take on the Ole Miss Rebels.
If you read my first article today on Texas Tech and Oklahoma, you may have seen that I alluded to the “tale of two teams” playing a role in today’s big games.
This was the other prime example of what I was talking about. When you look at Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Alabama and Ole Miss, these teams are a combined 44-10 on their home court, and winning by over 12 PPG on average!
Those same four teams, are 7-20 straight up on the road this season, losing by over five PPG on average! While Texas Tech is the only ranked team in that list, Alabama isn’t far behind, and none of those teams are under .500, and none of these teams and entirely out of the hunt for March Madness.
Although, if any of these teams want to make a real run in the tournament, they are going to have to find a way to step up their game outside their own stadium, because there are no home games when it comes down to the tournament!
Alabama Cruising on Offense, Woeful on Defense
Alabama finds themselves ranked #32 in the most recent AP poll, slipping just outside the top-25 overall, yet, they are sitting in the 9th ranking in their conference alone!
Six of their nine losses overall have come at the hands of SEC opponents this season, as a result of an offensive effort that has shot under 40% collectively against their conference foes.
The Alabama offense has put up over 80 PPG this season, but those abilities haven’t been executed quite as well in the games that matter down the stretch. That makes things increasingly difficult, especially when they are allowing over 80 PPG to the opposition in the last five games overall!
The Crimson Tide has yet to win a game this season as an away favorite, but they are 11-7 on the year overall as a favorite, and 5-3 off a straight up loss.
Surprisingly, with the way this season has gone against the SEC, Alabama still holds a 21-6 record on the money line against conference foes in the last two seasons, and they look to continue that trend as they turn the tables in the head-to-head record against Ole Miss.
Ole Miss Has Owned Alabama
Ole Miss is currently sitting just above the .500 mark with a 12-11 record on the year, yet their conference rank reflects the amount of wins they have put up in total, #12!
They are 12 out of 14 teams in the conference yet they have one of the best home records going around! This team is 10-4 on their own court, where they have won by over seven PPG on average, and are allowing just over 64 PPG to those foes.
The defense has also held their last five opponents to a combined shooting percentage under 40%, but things continue to be difficult as the offense is putting up under 64 PPG against SEC foes, while allowing those opponents to shoot over 47%.
Mississippi holds one huge advantage over Alabama, against the money line, the Rebels are 16-4 when taking on Alabama on their home court dating back to 1997. Although, more recently, things have been a struggle, they are 4-10 on the money line against teams putting up 77+ PPG in the last two seasons.
On top of the fact that since Davis took over as the head coach of Ole Miss, they are 7-18 on the money line (-25.3 units) after a game posting nine or less assists and they are 1-10 against teams putting up 77+ PPG after the 15 game mark of a season, struggling to capitalize as their season comes to a close in the past.
Alabama vs Ole Miss Prediction
This game may consist of two of the bottom five teams that are coming out of the SEC in conference standings, but Ole Miss defending a 10-4 record at home, taking on Alabama who is coming off back-to-back losses, should be exciting.
Any conference rivalry tends to provide exciting action and these two teams shouldn’t disappoint. I am going to ride with the home team here plus the points. I have mentioned the way that these teams have played at home, and the lack of production on the road.
Ole Miss has dominated straight up at home, and while this is one of their most difficult opponents that they have faced, I think they should be able to at least keep this game close, and if they can’t pull out the W on their home court, I can’t see them losing by more then 6 points as they defend their turf.
Prediction: Ole Miss +6
