Texas Tech vs Oklahoma Analysis
The Texas Tech Red Raiders head to the Lloyd Noble Center to take on Oklahoma, heading to an arena that holds one of the biggest home court advantages in the country. The Big 12 is accustomed to seeing big games and big talent this season with multiple teams competing at impressive levels.
Texas Tech comes in sitting at #3 in the conference standings, posting a 7-3 record against conference opponents while an Oklahoma team that is 13-10 on the season, sits in 9th place out of 10 teams in a competitive conference.
When you look at the Big 12 standings, you can truly see the talent that comes out of the conference, surprisingly enough, especially when you look at the bottom of the list.
There is just one team in the entire conference that is under .500 on the year and that is Oklahoma State and they are just one game below the “break even” marker, but the bottom three teams in the conference (West Virginia, Oklahoma & Iowa State) have combined for 27 losses on the year total, yet 22 of those losses are against conference opponents!
West Virginia has lost just nine games this season, with seven of them being against conference foes, Oklahoma has lost 10 games this year and seven of those are against Big 12 opponents, while Iowa State has lost eight games this season and every single one of them are against conference foes.
Crazy to think that anyone of these teams would potentially be competing for a legitimate shot at a conference title in most other conferences.
Red Raiders Reeling on Road
Texas Tech finds themselves in the top-10 in the country, sitting at the #9 ranking in the most recent polls, with Baylor and Kansas (the two teams ahead of them in the conference) finding themselves on the outside that is the sandwich of Big 12 teams in the top 10, ranking #10 and #8 respectively.
Although, a lot of the success that Texas Tech has accomplished this season, has been on their home court where they have been very impressive, but on the road they are just 2-5 this season, accounting for the entirety of their loss column this year.
Yet, the Red Raiders have kept things close, on the road they are losing by just under four PPG, but they have been a three point dog on average. Texas Tech will look to continue the run that they have had in the last five games as they look to prove they are a legitimate force, regardless of the site of the game.
They have won the last five games by over 11 points per game on average. Texas Tech is 15-2 on the year as a favorite, 11-2 with 2 (or 3) days of rest and 9-2 when going up against a team with equal rest.
Although in the last couple years, Texas Tech hasn’t always faired well on the money line, they are just 3-8 on the road off a road win against a conference rival, and in the last three seasons, they are 7-16 after allowing 65 or less points in back to back games, while going just 3-11 on the money line in the last two years after 2 or more consecutive wins.
Sooners Need to Find Way on Offense
Oklahoma is going up against one of the best defenses in the country, a tough feat for a team that is putting up just 63.5 PPG against conference opponents this season.
Although, Oklahoma has been similar to the tendencies for Texas Tech in one big aspect, the massive difference between play at home and on the road. The Sooners are 9-4 this season at home, putting up over 71 PPG, while holding the opposition to just over 64 PPG, winning by right around seven points on average!
Although, in the last five games Oklahoma is just 1-4 straight up and losing by eight PPG, but I will say, both of these teams have gone through a difficult stretch of opponents in their last five games.
Oklahoma hopes that their defense can compete at the same level that they know they can, and play this game on a similar level as TTU’s top defense.
Their defense has shown more then once that they are capable of playing to a level that can defend almost any team in the nation, they have held their last five opponents to a combined shooting percentage of under 40%, but they have allowed the Big 12 opponents to shoot over 47%.
Oklahoma is just 3-6 as a dog this year, while winning just one of their three games as a dog on their home court. They are .500 (6-6) against opponents with equal rest but just 4-5 off a loss and 3-7 against conference opponents.
None the less, Oklahoma is 13-5 on the money line against Texas Tech at home dating back to 1997, on top of being 92-44 at home against quality teams, teams outscoring their opponents by eight or more points on average since ’97.
Yet, that doesn’t go hand in hand with a running record in the last 2 seasons that has struggled to produce beyond the 15 game mark in the season, closing out the last two years with a record of 3-10 record on the money line against teams over .500 after that 15 game mark and a 1-11 record against teams allowin <= 42% shooting after that 15 games mark.
Texas Tech vs Oklahoma Prediction
In the big games today, there is a common theme of a “tale of two teams” for each and every team involved.
If you read my next article on Alabama and Ole Miss, these four teams have all put up impressive numbers thus far, but all of these teams hold a distinctive advantage on their home court, in comparison to playing away from what they are accustomed to.
Texas Tech is looking to continue the winning streak while Oklahoma is looking to bounce back from their loss, neither team has much experience this season playing as a home dog (or away favorite, respectively) and both teams have thrived on the defensive side of the ball. I expect a defensive battle and an exciting game in the B12 match-up.
Texas Tech does hold the advantage against the spread this season, and the Red Raiders are 10-1 ATS in the last 11 games. They have also covered 5 straight games on the road against teams that are over .500 at home, five straight games off a game where they covered the spread, and five straight wins against the spread as a favorite.
