Wisconsin vs Purdue Analysis
It’s a battle of the Big Ten’s best as Purdue travels to Wisconsin to take on the first place Badgers. Purdue currently sits one game out after their devastating loss to Michigan State over the weekend.
Wisconsin on the other hand has won four straight while surging their way to the top of the standings. The last time these two powerhouses met was back on January 3 in Purdue with the Badgers coming away with the road win 74-69.
The Boilermakers will be looking to get it back on track in a revenge spot with the top spot in the conference on the line. Let’s see what Purdue can do in order to get a big road win.
Is Purdue’s Offense Stalling?
What was most uncharacteristic about Purdue’s loss to Michigan State was that they only put up 65 total points.
They had showed chinks in the armor even before that game as they only had beat a bad Maryland team three games prior 62-61 and before that only scored 58 in a bad loss at Michigan.
Before the Michigan game they had scored 80+ in six straight games. Since the Michigan game Purdue has only scored 80+ once.
Overall on the season though Purdue has been playing great basketball coming in at #1 overall in adjusted offensive efficiency. They’re #3 in effective field goal percentage and #2 in three point field goal percentage.
They’re great at sharing the ball ranking 20th nationally in assist/field goal ratio. On defense though Purdue could improve at generating turnovers as they rank 338th in percentage of opponent possessions resulting in a turnover.
Head Coach Matt Painter will have to go back to basics with his team to get them scoring 80+ points consistently once again.
Badgers Booming at Right Time
The Badgers are all over the board on offense. Their 35th ranking in adjusted offensive efficiency is great but their 246th ranking in effective field goal percentage is not.
They’re great at limiting turnovers on offense with just under nine per game but they don’t generate many assists as they’re 311th nationally in assist/field goals ratio.
National Player of the Year candidate Johnny Davis has been the primary reason for the Badgers current top ten ranking. He averages 20.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game while shooting over 44% from the field.
Last time out against Purdue he was unstoppable scoring 37 points on 13-24 shooting while grabbing 14 rebounds.
Wisconsin is home to the 19th largest Division I Basketball court which is sure to be full and rocking tonight as the Badgers look to continue their charge to a Big Ten Regular Season Championship.
Wisconsin vs Purdue Prediction
I think Wisconsin is hitting their stride at the perfect time as we head into March and overall against the spread they sit at 16-12. The Boilermakers are worse in that aspect at 13-15-1.
According to KenPom Purdue ranks 85th in luck rating, but the Badgers are much luckier, ranking 5th which could play a very big factor here if the game is close down the stretch. Take Wisconsin plus the points here.
Prediction: Wisconsin +3
