St. Bonaventure vs Richmond Analysis
Regardless of the conference, this Atlantic 10 match-up is one of the most exciting games of the day, because these two teams are some of the most experienced teams in the country.
Combined, these two teams have nine returning starters this season, Richmond is 19th in the nation in average experience among their roster, while St. Bonaventure is 8th in Division I ball!
St. Bonaventure could potentially be without Osun Osounniyi, but if he is healthy, this Bonaventure team is set to play yet another game with five returning senior starters as they fight for the 4th spot in the conference tournament in the last game of the regular season.
Richmond currently sits in 6th in the conference with a 10-7 record, while Bonaventure holds the 4th spot with an 11-5 conference record.
Richmond is looking to gain some ground and cash in on their 2nd win of the season against St. Bonaventure, but this time, they are going to have to do it on Bonaventure’s court.
Richmond Remains Average
Both teams come into this game with 19 wins, but Richmond is peaking at the right time as we head into the postseason, winning 9 of their last 14 games.
They are coming off a bad loss in their last outing, but that could be a good sign as they are 37-19 against the money line off an upset loss vs. a conference rival dating back to 1997.
Although, this season, they haven’t had the best of luck playing on the road, they are still sitting over .500, but with an 8-7 record, this game is make or break to keep them on the positive side of the record away from home.
Surprisingly enough, Richmond has actually put up over 73 PPG on their road games, which is more then they have put up per game on average in the entirety of the season, but their defense has allowed almost 72 PPG to the opposition, three PPG higher then they have allowed on average this season.
Richmond does hold the advantage offensively in terms of shooting percentage, ranking 67th in 2PT% but coming in at 161st from beyond the arc.
Yet their ball security has been one of their strongest aspects on the offensive side of the ball, potentially learning a thing or two practicing against a team that ranks 40th in steal percentage, themselves!
Their defense has created turnovers, in the form of steals, better than nearly 89% of the country. Regardless, the defense has had their ups and their downs against the top offensive units this season, they started the year 1-4 against top-100 offenses, and after winning the next four in a row, they have now broke even with a 4-4 record in their last 8 opportunities against these top-100 offensive units.
This Richmond team does have the advantage against St. Bonaventure posting a 17-12 record in the head-to-head series dating back to 1997, although they are just 2-10 against the spread this season against teams shooting 45% or better, losing straight up as a favorite on average in those 12 games.
On the other hand, they are 9-1 against the spread on the road after failing to cover four (or five) of their last six games overall in the last three seasons, but this is just their 2nd game in the last week and they have posted a 31-11 record against the money line with that kind of rest in the last three years.
Bonnies Bank on Experience
There aren’t too many teams in the country that can say they are playing with five returning starters, especially with all five of them being seniors.
They could potentially be without Osun Osunniyi, one of those seniors that has been a major piece to the puzzle that is Bonaventure.
Osunniyi holds the best offensive rating on the team, their best rebounder, best shot blocker and the best inside scorer, but there is plenty of experience throughout the team.
St. Bonaventure is off their worst shooting game of the season, but that is off a seven game win streak, their previous loss was the 1st in a month, with the most recent loss prior to that coming to the hands of Richmond on February 4th.
Although, this time, it is a different ballpark for Bonaventure, or should I say different hardwood. The Bonnies are set to take on Richmond on their home court this time, and they have been an entirely different team at home this season, they have used the 59th rated home court advantage to help propel them to a 12-2 record on their home court.
At home they have posted over 78 PPG and allowed just barely over 66 points to the opposition! They have been on a similar stretch as Richmond cashing in on seven of the last eight games overall, and since the start of conference play they are 11-5.
The Bonnies have played 14 games against top-100 offenses this season, and they started hot winning four of the first five, after losing six straight, they have now gotten back on track and have neutralized three straight opportunities to get the win.
Their weakness on that side of the ball is stopping the three, and while Richmond doesn’t have the most impressive statistical numbers, a good majority of their points have come from deep and that could be the difference maker.
St. Bonaventure vs Richmond Prediction
Both these teams are experienced as can be, as I mentioned before, but both these teams are coming off a loss where they shot under 36%.
They both have also only lost back-to-back games twice this season, with Bonaventure doing it once at the hands of Richmond, but that will change tonight as one of the two teams will add a 3rd stretch of back-to-back losses to close out the regular season.
With a COVID-limited conference schedule, Richmond will stay behind the Bonnie’s regardless of the outcome of tonight’s game, but a loss could drop them to the 5th spot behind St. Louis, pending tomorrow’s game against VCU.
I am taking the Bonnie’s on their home court. They have dominated at home, and I anticipate them bouncing back, revenging the double digit loss in the first meeting between these two teams.
Prediction: St. Bonaventure -4
