Saint Louis vs St. Bonaventure Analysis
St. Bonaventure travels over to Saint Louis for this Atlantic-10 conference match-up! Saint Louis puts their six game win streak on the line as they look to continue their push for the #1 spot in the conference, not far behind Davidson.
St. Bonaventure finds themselves in 6th place in the conference, with a 5-4 record against the Atlantic-10, but they are 13-7 on the season, which isn’t a bad record when you look at the fact that they have played a top-100 schedule in terms of difficulty thus far.
St. Bonaventure also looks to extend their head-to-head lead against Saint Louis, as they have won 14 of the 24 match-ups between these teams dating back to 1997.
Where is the Bonnies Bench?
St. Bonaventure has had a rough stretch, they are coming off a 25 point win against Fordham, but they have lost four out of the last seven games, that’s over half of their losses on the entire season in just the last three weeks.
They are just 2-4 on the road this season, losing by almost six ppg, playing those games as a favorite on average this year, yet losing outright more times then not. St. Bonaventure has put up just 63.9 PPG on the road this season, which has gotten them the loss in three of their last four games away from home!
Regardless, the team still ranks in KenPom’s top-100 overall and their offense puts them at #61 in terms of efficiency. The average experience that this team holds may be a huge factor coming down the stretch, but they are one of the worst teams in the nation in terms of bench minutes, lacking in depth on this roster.
That could be a major part of the reason that they are just 1-6 in the last seven games against teams in KenPom’s top-100 overall and six straight losses against teams that rank in the top-100 in offensive efficiency rankings.
All of that aside, the team is 10-2 in road games against the money line after allowing 60 or less points in the last 3 seasons.
Billikens Balling at Home
Saint Louis has been a dominant force this season, especially against conference opponents, they are 17-6 on the season, but they are 8-2 against conference opponents at 10-3 at home on the season.
In their home games they are outscoring opponents by over 13 PPG, putting up almost 80 points on average (while shooting almost 48%), that, on top of the fact that they are allowing just 62 PPG to the opposition on their court, has resulted in six straight winners at home.
Not only have they won six straight at home, they have also won six straight games overall, stemming from almost 80 PPG in the last five overall, and winning by 13.6 PPG on average!
Saint Louis’s offense has been impressive all year, not just at home, they come in ranked #47 in offensive efficiency, stemming from 79.4 PPG average in all games this season, and while they are averaging slightly below that against conference foes, they are still putting up over 77 points against the Atlantic-10 conference.
They also have a top-60 defense in terms of efficiency, which has helped hold conference opponents to just 39.1% shooting on the season.
This Saint Louis team has also played some of their best ball against some of the best opponents, they have lost just one game against defenses that rank in the top-105 in efficiency, with the only loss coming in an upset against Massachusetts.
They are 13-3 on the money line at home since 1997 off 3 straight wins against conference rivals, 17-4 on the money line at home off five straight games committing 14 or less turnover’s in the same span, and they are 7-4 on the money line at home head-to-head against St. Bonaventure in the last 24 years.
Even more recently, since the hire of head coach Ford, they are 31-9 on the money line against conference opponents, 15-1 at home in February, and 17-3 at home against teams that average 6 or less steals on the season.
Saint Louis vs St. Bonaventure Prediction
St. Louis finds Rashad Williams with a question mark next to his name coming into tonight’s game, he has made a solid contribution in the games he has played, but the starting line-up will be healthy.
Even with the injury concern, Saint Louis still holds the definitive advantage in the site of the game, and the conference record. This will be the first game of a back-to-back series that concludes on Monday for the second match-up. Can St. Bonaventure’s defense step up for this match-up?
The way that Saint Louis has played against their hardest competition of the year, on top of their home record and their conference record, has me going with Saint Louis in this game.
St. Bonaventure has had defensive struggles recently, as well as an offense that has lacked in production in comparison to the way they started the year, against a team that is riding a 6 game hot streak.
Prediction: Saint Louis -5
