Toledo vs Ohio Analysis
Bragging rights for leaders of the MAC are on the line tonight as the conference’s two top teams go at it one more time before the end of the regular season. The two team’s first meeting ended in a 87-69 win in which Toledo prevailed at Ohio.
Toledo dropped a game to Ball State over the weekend in which they were nine point favorites. Ohio hasn’t lost a game since the loss to Toledo and is 13-1 overall in their last 14 games.
These two teams could very well meet in the MAC Tournament Championship with a NCAA Tournament bid on the line, but before that, let’s look at this intense matchup tonight and where each team can excel against the other.
Rockets Rolling With Rollins
The Rockets get the Bobcats at home this time where they will be three point favorites. This line more than likely would’ve been larger had the Rockets not dropped their game to Ball State over the weekend.
Toledo relies on their starters heavily on a game-to-game basis in which they have the sixth least bench production in the country. Fatigue for those starters seems to not be a problem though as they’re 21st in the country in turning the ball over.
Toledo shoots it alright from deep (85th nationally), but the three point shot isn’t exactly a part of their offensive game plan as only 26% of their total points per game come from behind the arch (312th nationally).
When they do shoot the three though, expect it to be from JT Shumate who averages over 15 ppg while shooting over 48% from deep. Sophomore Ryan Rollins is the go-to scorer for Toledo though averaging 20 ppg while shooting 48% overall from the field.
He’s also good for a couple steals per game which helps with the Rockets inability to create turnovers overall (320th nationally).
Ohio Needs The Three Point Shot Going
The Bobcats are going to miss their home court tonight in which KenPom ranks as the 26th toughest place to play this season in the country. While Ohio boasts an impressive 19-3 record, they are only 10-11 against the spread this season.
Like Toledo, Ohio doesn’t turn the ball over much but the Bobcats do like to shoot the three as over 35% of their scoring comes from deep which is 78th in the country.
They’re only in the middle of the pack as far as three point percentage goes so if Ohio is going to win with the three pointer in this one, it will likely be from top scorer and ball-handler Mark Sears who averages over 19 ppg while shooting it over 42% from three point range.
Another similarity the Rockets and Bobcats have is their non-existent bench in which the Bobcats only average 23 points as a team per game off the bench.
Toledo vs Ohio Prediction
If it wasn’t for a bad loss for Toledo over the weekend the Bobcats would be in a good spot to pull off a win here. I expect Toledo to look at this game as a bounce back especially against such a stellar conference opponent.
The Rockets don’t want to let this season get away from them which will be the case if they drop this one to Ohio at home.
Prediction: Toledo -2.5
