Utah vs Washington Analysis
The first day of the Pac-12 Conference Tournament concludes with Washington vs Utah coming to us from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The Huskies won both regular season matchups by scores of 74-68 in Utah and in double overtime at home 77-73.
Since that double overtime win though, Washington has only gone 5-6. The Utes have had much better seasons in the past as this year they only went 4-16 in conference play but three of those wins have come in the past eight games.
The Huskies head into this game as three point favorites riding a two game winning streak as the Utes have lost three straight. Let’s see if Washington can do enough to cover as favorites in this one.
Terrell Brown Balling for Huskies
The Huskies like to play up-tempo but they almost need to do that as they generate additional possessions to make up for their lack of efficient and effective offense.
They’re average in adjusted offensive efficiency ranking 160th nationally, but are much worse in other key offensive categories.
Their 313th in effective field goal percentage, 304th in three point percentage and 305th in two point percentage.
When it comes to intangibles though the Huskies are solid. They’re top 100 nationally in taking care of the ball and they rank 31st in generating turnovers on defense. Washington is also top 75 in blocks steals and non-steal turnovers produced on defense.
Senior guard Terrell Brown leads the charge for the Huskies ranking top ten in the country in points per game at 21.8. He also adds over four rebounds and assists per game as well as over two steals per game.
Like the rest of the team though, he doesn’t shoot it much or even that great from three only draining ten all season. As a team overall the Huskies only shoot 31% from deep.
Utes Key to Victory is at Free Throw Line
Utah is really going to have to make all their possessions count as they don’t produce many turnovers on defense, but do roll out a top 100 team as far as adjusted offensive efficiency is concerned.
Their most consistent from the free throw line ranking in the top 25 in free throw percentage as a team at 77.1%.
They’re below average shooting threes as a team at 33% but they rank in the top 130 nationally in three pointers attempted per game. In their two games against Washington the Utes were right on par with their three point shooting for the season shooting at 32% against the Huskies.
Washington won both those games and covered to put it in perspective. So even if Utah shoots how they normally do from deep, it more than likely will result in a loss.
The Utes don’t really have a star player but their top scorer is Branden Carlson at 13.1 points per game. He is the only player on the team averaging double digit scoring per game and shoots at over 50% from the field.
Utah vs Washington Prediction
Against the spread this season Utah is 10-17-3 and Washington is 17-13. With how the teams have been playing lately I have to roll with the Huskies to cover the three point spread as I expect Brown to take off here as he put up 30 in their previous meeting.
The Huskies produce more blocks and steals per game as they’ll try to play up-tempo to keep Utah out of their element. The Huskies win by five or more and move on to play USC tomorrow night.
Prediction: Washington -3
