Washington vs Washington State Analysis
In the first game of an interstate rivalry home-and-home Washington travels to Pullman to take on Washington State. Record wise these teams couldn’t be any more even as the Huskies are 13-12, 8-7 in conference play and the Cougars are 14-12, 7-8 in conference play.
Unless either of these teams make a deep conference tournament run, their NCAA Tournament hopes are likely gone.
In this matchup though the Cougars are trying to snap a five game losing streak in which three of those were against ranked opponents.
The Huskies haven’t been much better losing four of their previous five with their last three being against ranked opponents.
These two teams seem evenly matched but the Cougars come into this one as nine point favorites. If there’s one thing we know, the Beasley Coliseum will be rockin tonight.
Huskies Need Brown Jr. on Offense
The Huskies will get the Cougars at their home gym this Saturday, but what can Washington do to get past a stout Washington State defense?
They roll out one of the most experienced teams in the country led by senior Terrell Brown Jr. who averages over 21 points per game which is 6th in the NCAA.
He struggled in their 26 point loss to UCLA during their last game only scoring 13 points on 5-17 shooting. Brown Jr. may be in for another difficult night if the WSU defense is on point.
He contributes all around the board though averaging over four rebounds and assists per game as well as 2.4 steals per game which is 11th nationally. Other than Brown Jr. though this offense is quite dreadful.
As a team they rank 300th or worse in effective field goal percentage, two point and three point field goal percentage. They are aggressive near the rim generating a solid amount of free throws per game.
The problem is they’re not great at shooting free throws ranking 263rd in that category nationally. If someone can step up besides Brown Jr. their up-tempo style of play can come in handy in trying to break this WSU defense.
Cougars Clamp Down on Defense
Ranking 29th overall in points per game allowed this Washington State Cougars defense is one to take note of.
Digging deeper into defensive statistics, the Cougars rank 19th in adjusted defensive efficiency, 43rd in effective field goal percentage allowed, 37th in turnovers generated and in the top 100 in two point and three point field goal percentage allowed.
The Cougars are average on offense, living and dying by the three pointer. They rank in the top 30 in three pointers attempted per game but only average 33% shooting from deep making over nine per game which is top 40 in the country.
None of their top four scorers shoot over 40% from deep which can be a problem if they’re having an off night because their two point field goal percentage is subpar ranking 317th nationally.
Washington vs Washington State Prediction
With how dismal the Washington offense is besides Brown Jr. I expect the WSU defense to take over and prevail here. With an inflated line and the over/under sitting at 136, I see the under hitting here.
I don’t have enough confidence for WSU to cover a nine point spread in a rivalry game, especially without a proven offense or go-to star player and they’ve only averaged 58 PPG in their last five. The Huskies have averaged 68 PPG in their last five.
Prediction: Under 136
