San Francisco 49ers Off-Season Analysis
This San Francisco 49ers team put up an impressive season last year but they played what was arguably the easiest schedule in the league last year. This year, they won’t have that same luck in the schedule, as they play what is seemingly one of the hardest schedules in the league.
The odds that they can continue to outscore opponents by 3.6 PPG (12th) and out-gain opponents by 65.7 YPG (3rd) are slim. This offseason was underwhelming for the team and fans, but it was to be expected seeing as this is the first time in years that they have lacked the salary space and a first round draft pick in years.
49ers Lose Quality Players
With that being said, the fact that the books anticipate them being just as good as they were last year against a noticeably harder schedule, with the offseason that they had is questionable, especially in a division against Arizona and LA Rams.
San Francisco lost 4 bonafide starters this offseason, losing Alex Mack due to his retirement, and the departure of LG Laken Tomlinson, NT D.J. Jones, and CB K’Waun Williams in free agency.
Although we all know that you don’t have to be a starter to make an impact, they also lost S Jaquiski Tartt to Philly, who played in 67% of the snaps last year, RT Tom Compton (52.2% of snaps), Raheem Mostert, and Mohamed Sanu. All of this on top of the fact that Josh Norman still hasn’t decided if he will be back.
New Offensive Regime On The Horizon?
All of this has resulted in a multitude of important questions that have been left unanswered by the 49ers. There is an uncertainty in the offensive line, with players returning from injury, lack of experience and the aforementioned departure of Tomlinson and Mack.
There is also an uncertainty in the secondary, at least at the slot corner position and the strong safety. Will the new coaching staff be able to come together quickly?
Mike McDaniel took a head coaching position and with that, came the replacement of 4 well-respected offensive position coaches. Will Trey Lance be able to step-up?
Trey Lance being able to recreate what the 49ers did last season would be impressive, we saw glimmers of hope from Lance, but there were also numbers that made you cringe, like his 10 points, a season low for the team and his QBR at moments.
There are still questions surrounding Jimmy G. and if he will still be in a San Francisco jersey this season, but regardless, questions surrounding the QB are always a concern. The biggest story of the offseason for the 49ers were talks around Deebo Samuel which came to an end recently as he re-signed with the franchise for 3-years worth $71.5 million.
San Francisco 49ers Win Total Prediction
When you take into account the players that were lost in the offseason, and the lack of improvement over the same span.
Alongside the multitude of questions surrounding the offense, and even some questions in the secondary on defense, I find it hard to believe that this San Francisco team can actually improve on their numbers last year. The Rams and the Cardinals both improved this offseason and the 49ers rank high in SOS for a reason.
Starting in week 7, San Francisco plays vs. Kansas City, @ Los Angeles Rams, BYE, vs. Los Angeles Chargers, @ Arizona, vs. New Orleans, vs. Miami, vs. Tampa Bay, a very difficult stretch of 7 games in 8 weeks and 11 of their 17 opponents finishing last season with a winning record! I don’t foresee San Francisco improving on last year, or covering this win total.
