Colorado State vs New Mexico Analysis
Colorado State and New Mexico are on opposite sides of the Mountain West Conference standings as the Rams sit just one game back of conference leader Boise State. New Mexico on the other hand is just 3-8 in conference play.
However, they have gone 4-1 in their last five games. Colorado State came away with a home win against New Mexico the last time these two met but it was only by six, 80-74. The Rams are riding high after their last game which was an overtime win against the Broncos from Boise State.
Can New Mexico keep this one close again against the Rams, this time at home?
Rams Riding Roddy to Victory
The Rams 20-3 overall record is mostly thanks to their highly efficient offense. They rank 16th overall in adjusted offensive efficiency, 9th in effective field goal percentage, 33rd in three point field goal percentage and 12th in two point field goal percentage.
Where they struggle on offense is their ability to gain offensive rebounds in which they only average six per game. Junior David Roddy continues to be the primary playmaker for the Rams putting up over 19 PPG while averaging over 47% shooting from deep and 58% shooting overall.
His PPG output is good for 37th in the nation and his three point percentage is 20th. He put up 21 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds in the team’s previous game against New Mexico. On defense, the Rams are as average as they come ranking between 100-200 nationally in critical defensive categories.
Better Late Than Never for Lobos
The Lobo’s current three game winning streak is tied for their longest this season as before that they were 1-8 in the nine previous games.
They’ve really missed the services of Gethro Muscadin who was seriously injured in a car wreck and hasn’t played in general since December. Jamal Mashburn Jr. has been the Lobos best player this season averaging over 18 points per game while shooting 45% from the field.
Junior guard Jaelen House is another name to keep an eye on for the Lobos as the team’s leader in assists per game and also shoots over 86% from the free throw line.
He was the team’s leading scorer the last time these two met putting up 18 points and adding seven assists. House and Mashburn Jr. will need to on their A-game if they want to keep it close again with the Rams.
Colorado State vs New Mexico Prediction
As bad as their record is, New Mexico is actually one of the best in the country against the spread going 15-6-2 thus far. With the line that favors the Rams by 7.5, this could be a trap game for them as they put in much effort in their previous game against Boise State. New Mexico won their previous game as well against a strong Wyoming team in which they will ride that momentum into this contest with the Rams as the Lobos really don’t have much to lose. I think New Mexico plays loose and confident in this one keeping it even closer than the last time these two met.
Prediction: New Mexico +7.5
