Georgetown vs Seton Hall Analysis
There has to be a little bit of flashback happening for Seton Hall coming into tonight’s game. While the situation is a little bit different, Seton Hall comes into this game looking to take down Georgetown who is a noticeably lower seed.
Last year, Georgetown went on to win the Big East tournament as an 8 seed last year, after taking down a 5th ranked Seton Hall team in the tournament last season.
The difference is, this season Georgetown comes in ranked 11th in the conference, and now they are meeting in the opening round of this years Big East championship run.
Seton Hall has played noticeably better in conference play then Georgetown, but they could be without Kadary Richmond, a 22 game starter thus far in the season.
Hoyas Go From Best to Worst
Georgetown has very quickly gone from the conference tournament champion, to a team that failed to win a single game in conference play this year!
They have lost 20 consecutive games, including two losses to Seton Hall already this season, one as recent as March 2nd. Georgetown is one of the taller teams in the nation, and they have played one of the hardest schedules, but their defense has been abysmal and is ranked 326th defending the 3 point shot.
They have played 15 games against KenPom’s top-100 offenses and they are just 1-14 against those teams, losing 14 straight after a win on December 11th against Syracuse.
They have arguably played the hardest schedule in terms of the defenses that they have gone up against, they are 0-24 against teams that rank in the top 190 in defensive efficiency!
With five of their six wins on the season coming against teams that rank outside the top-200 defensively. Georgetown has struggled defensively to say the least, but their offense has obviously been an issue as well.
They have dropped all 13 road games they have played this year, shooting just 38.5% away from home (allowing opponents to shoot 48%), and they are 0-19 against conference opponents, while shooting an even worse percentage of 38.1%, and allowing 48.6% shooting to their conference counterparts.
Pirates Need Richmond to Play
Seton Hall is one of the better teams coming out of the Big East conference, but if Kadary Richmond is unable to go tonight, that could be a big loss for this team.
He leads the team in assist percentage, as well as steal percentage, ranking nationally in both categories. Regardless, Seton Hall is noticeably more capable of making the best of a situation like this, even without one of their top players.
They rank 63rd in offensive efficiency, but their defense is even better, ranking 28th in efficiency. Seton Hall ranks 25th against effective FG%, 45th defending the 3PT shot, and 27th defending shots inside the arc.
As impressive as Seton Hall has been, it is even more impressive when you think about the fact that they have played the 29th hardest schedule, but that comes from a team that is 5th in average height and 22nd in average experience on the roster, two essential aspects in college basketball.
They have the advantage in the head-to-head series against Georgetown dating back to 1997, posting a 23-18 record, but they have won five of the seven games in the last three years.
While Seton Hall has won 8 of their last 10 games, they are just 7-6 on the road, shooting just 40.5%, and covering seven of those 13 games.
They are also 11-8 against conference opponents this year but they are 0-7 against the spread in the last two seasons against teams that are under .500 after the 15+ game mark on the season.
They have have averaged just 64.6 PPG against those teams under .500, while allowing 64.3 PPG to the opposition, which looks to set the pace for a close game.
Yet, Seton Hall’s defense will be the difference maker in this game, they have held opponents to 40.4% shooting on the season, and holding the last five opponents to 39.4% shooting, if they can keep that pace, they should have this game in the bag.
Georgetown vs Seton Hall Prediction
The bookmakers don’t see this game staying close as Seton Hall is currently a 9.5 point favorite, Which may be true seeing as the Big East doesn’t have a tendency to keep games close, with under 24% of the games being decided by four or less points.
A conference tournament championship would be a big resume builder for either one of these two teams, as the Big East is arguably one of the hardest conferences this season (behind B12, B10, and SEC in my opinion).
That would potentially be the only chance that Georgetown would have to make a run at March Madness.
Prediction: Seton Hall -9.5
